He doesn't hate tropes or archetypes, he just dislikes how they're usually applied in a very shallow way. For instance, he didn't dislike that Aragorn was an Arthurian hidden king who rose to power and saved his people, he disliked how it's just assumed that a good person makes a good king, and that things like tax policy and foreign relations are skipped over.
Jon is the closest thing to an archetype played straight this series has. You can actually chart out his progress in the monomyth. Granted, it hasn't be cut and dry; it's done in a way that fits GRRM's style. Jon makes mistakes. He's a young man and in some ways still a kid. He has emotional baggage and lets that manifest outwardly in inconvenient ways. He makes mistakes while leading.
Jon coming back is almost certain, and him being important in some way to the end game of the series is a good bet as well. GRRM doesn't subvert tropes just for the hell of it, he does it only when the trope conflicts with how he feels a situation would realistically play out.
You guys do realize there is agriculture on the iron isles, right? It's one of the ironies of the series that the guys who boast "we do not sow" have been reduced to a basic farming and mining society since the end of the old way.

Even with Robb's defeat, there's still more soldiers available in the North than the Iron Islanders have. Before Robb got red weddinged, he was about to march on Moat Cailin and wreck Vicky, because unlike everyone else, Robb actually has people that can lead him through swamp. Moat Cailin is bascialy defenseless from the North, so all Robb needs is a small force to be escorted by the frogmen (who are already fucking up the Iron babbies occupying Moat Cailin) and then he'd be easily able to reoccupy the fort and evict the Iron Babbies from the North proper. While there's not much you can do about the coast line, the western coast of the North is basically useless anyway.

did you not read my post? Robb was going to have access through the Neck thanks to the Crannogmen. Moat Cailin is not the only way through the Neck, it's just the most accessible to ordinary people. Once you are north of Moat Cailin, it's the easiest castle to take, because it's only designed to defend against southern attacks. Moat Cailin is basically a non issue for Robb in the long run.
