1. They require many times less resources. It means that books don't need to cater to lowest common denominator in the pursuit of payback. They could exploit much broader ideas and auditories.
2. They have less conflicts with people tastes and preferences. You may not like particular hero face in the film. In the book it is your imagination, you choose what you like.
3. Choice of pacing. Average is another word for "suits no one".
Doesn't mean that films can't be perfect with everything been likeable, but they require much more efforts and luck than books. Books have MUCH less chance to trigger dislikes. Films are hard mode to get them right and are much less diverse.

The big advantages books, pictures and movies have is that they invoke feelings using sensations. How we respond to those stimulus are key.
Number 2 is particular a bad point because it is extremely difficult to picture something. It would probably be better to use voice here because voice is something that people can easily imagine.
However books also have a similar problem. If you do not like the characterization of a character you are fucked in a book. A movie has a lot more chances to hook you using actors, style, voices and mis-en-scene techniques.
I think it is more of a what are you affected by more, highs or lows?
If you are the type of person where problems in a story affect you more than the good parts, you will prefer books.
If you don't mind problems as much as finding something to hook you, you will like movies more.
