Sure it didn't have the deep impact on the views of wae the original had, which actually had actors who experienced the fights first hand, but I believe the modern remake outdid it in every other way.
With less strict boundaries, we could finally witness the atrocities that everyone went through, like the child tape scene, which really does make you sympathize with Connor even more since you get to see his personal hell rather than hearing stories about it. Mark Wahlberg really outdid himself when it came to the special effects, mainly the bloodied and beaten Vietnamese makeup .

Also how can you not say the original cast was not memorable? The dynamic between Roger and Peter was amazing and we really felt for Peter as he watched his companion slowly turn.
The audience collectively hated Stephen, but once the bikers came to invade, he was suddenly someone they were rooting for. When he finally gets bit, it's a mix of emotions considering how he was portrayed throughout the film.
Fran, although a female, didn't play the typical female roll (at least not for the time). She didn't spend her time screaming and running away. She was told to stay put (and almost killed herself when she didn't) and when that didn't work it, it was clear she needed to make herself useful. Even as she was going through pregnancy, she managed to learn to shoot and fly a helicopter. She proved to be a person of actual use.
The characters in the remake are so forgettable. How shitty was it chasing after some stupid girl because her dog (that she met like a week ago) ran off and she couldn't live without him. Come on that movie was fun as an action/gore flick, but no where near as memorable or poignant as the original

I agree OP but the screenplay had imo major issues. The second the people in the truck showed up it went off the rails, far too many characters. The initial setup of the mall cops versus the other group would have been much better and provided the needed dramatic tension. As it was everyone was just lost in the shuffle.
