Nah. Utilitarian? Sure. But utilitarianism does not absolve Stannis when his actions had no discernible effects: Blackwater led to thousands of deaths and cripples and continuation of War of Five Kings, not helping of people.
Stannis cannot be redeemed by his moral principles, because his belief in justice is not echoed in his actions: the man took part in adultery, kinslaying, kidnapping, use of Dark Magic and extralegal executions, when he started to burn his allies alive.
He cannot be redeemed by his results, either, as they merely added up to unnecessary bloodshed, despite some legitimate intents.
I'm a Stannis fan, but that is mostly because I quite like how conflicted he is in his morals and principles. He is not the saint he portrays himself as, and that is his doom.

I liked Stannis. He should have become King. Sucks that he "may" be dead. I believe he is, but I certainly wouldn't be against the choice to keep him alive if it went that route.
Interesting that the actor didn't like the part. I always thought Stannis looked kind of bored, like it was a waste of his time to be doing the shit he was doing. Very stoic and uninterested. I think it worked out quite well.
