I genuinely feel bad for Martha. I didn't care about her until she realized Clark isn't who he said he was and she still agreed to help him. I respect loyalty and it sucks this is how she gets treated for staying by her man.

IDK, I've been reading a lot of Cold War non-fiction recently. The spy from Bridge of Spies got paraded around by the USSR as a hero even though he never actually accomplished anything during his time in the US. The USSR was very big on propaganda, trying to convince the populace that they were winning and their efforts were successful. I could see her being paraded around for people to see the way that guy was. At least she was somewhat successful as a spy.
