I still believe that Hiro will unfuck himself and finish the board, in prep we need to gather charts and set a required viewing list to filter out the capeshit posters.

Posting the Essential 100 from last night, post other lists and recommendations.

Jesus Christ did you make that list on /v/?

this is the only list that matters
>>
>>68870476
>>68870728
both those lists suck, but at least OP's is the entry level of entry level, that reply chart is a bunch of hazardously selected art house that doesn't even slightly manage to be essential and actually puts the entire creation into suspicion when you realize how arbitrary the selection of filmmakers and their respective films are.
>>
>>68870728
No
>>
>>68870926
>arbitrary
>Murnau
>Mekas
>Vertov
>Zhangke
>post-pop Godard
>Ozu
>Cassavetes
>Dreyer
>Rivette
>Joe and Ming-liang
Instead you want a list of narrative movies that everyone should have seen by now. Just like AFI, BFI, IMDb, or Reddit top 250. Where's /film/'s individuality?

>>68870955
it's like you anti-art idiots want /film/ to be a copy of /tv/.
>>
>>68871174
yeah, arbitrary, because you're just naming off the few art house filmmakers off the top of your head like your list is any more valid than this one i'll whip up ironically
>Barnet
>Brackhage
>Vasilyev
>Anger
>Ruiz
>Greenaway
>Mizoguchi
>de Sica
>Ray
wow that was EASY hahaha
>>
>>68870728
This list just seems like a random slice of arthouse with no discernable structure. Watching all of the films on this list would do nothing other than bragging rights for obscure works by directors who have done much better films, there's nothing "essential" about it

The OP list is at least a wide variety, watching all of those would give you a basic understanding of many genres and directors styles.
>>
>>68870476
Lmfao!! That list is so fucking pleb! xD
>>
>>68870728
Lists like this are obviously not designed to introduce people to films, they exist solely for the purposes of ego stroking.

How many of those have you actually seen? My guess someone like you who spends more time on a chinese communist forum, making stupid charts and lists, and arguing about trivial nonesense won't have the time to actually watch and enjoy films.
>>
>>68870476
Look, I'm pleb as fuck, I've seen 13 of those. I've seen very few movies total as its a recent hobby. But I've heard of every single movie on that list
>>68870728
This list is much better. I know of about half the directors there, but not necessarily specific films. It's a guide to digging into film as an art and has much less known recs that are actually helpful, and not just the same 100 movies everyone who's been into film for 5 months has heard of
>>
>>68871512
>>68871568
It's not purely art house. There's also experimental, narrative, non-narrative, avant-garde, silent, independent, actor-driven, FNW, and hyperrealism. Watching film doesn't have an end goal. Do you throw the term "art house" at everything that isn't Hollywood?

>>
>implying /film/ won't be wall to wall capeshit

There is no way to objectively measure film quality or merit. This isn't /lit/, where 99.9999999% of books written are utter trash, and you need an actual directory to get away from the trash (and you'll still be directed to trash, more often than not), these are movies. Film appreciation is entirely personal and subjective. Film doesn't have the time or means to express complex ideas or sentiments. Any attempt to increase the complexity of a film has always been heavily steeped in symbolism and reference... references to fucking books or, worse, to other movies.

also the idea there's a difference between film/movie/flick/kino is nothing but a maymay. The terms are 100% interchangeable and nothing is going to change that.

Not to mention theres far too many epic memesters to ever get a new elitist board off the ground. As the instant the board opens, its going to be flooded with idiots and assholes falling over each other to set the memetic theme of the board.

So all of you can just fuck off.

It's got a nice mix of obscure arthouse and acessible stuff.
And it's all important too.

Someone should just make a list of The Criterion Collection catalog.
It does lean a bit on the artsy side but overall it is very well balanced film collection between art house, foreign and big studio productions.
>>
>>68876673
Criterion Collection is way too safe f.am. They rarely release anything interesting or exciting.

How come /tv/ doesn't have a sticky of essential charts and recommendations like /lit/ or /mu/ have? It seems like a good way to filter out the plebs

watch more movies
>>

I can't believe I'm saying this but this actually a tolerable list
>>
>>68870728
this list...it has really good films, but the demographics who would be able to sit through most of these aren't in need of charts lmao
these are movie for hardened cinephiles desu
>>
>>68877459
Agreed. Those who actually want to watch those are ones who already have means to find movies on their own anyway.
>>
>>68877378
>Finish looking through the list

>Jaws

Never mind I spoke too soon, I was way too impressed seeing Tokyo Story, Amadeus and Stalker on the list
>>
>>68877459
>these movies are for hardened cinephiles
exactly why it would work. if a normie saw this sticked to the top of /film/ he would immediately leave. you dont actually have to watch any of these, it just has to do it's job, which is act as a normie filter.

are you retarded? if you want a boring canon of film that's been static the last 30 years S&S has that covered. what you're doing right now is equivalent to walking into /mu/ and going "WHY ISN'T MICHAEL JACKSON OR THE ROLLING STONES /mu/CORE?"

I love the idea, but I don't think /film/ will be allowed to stay. Just look at what happened when it first launched; it was everything /tv/ is now, without the /GoT/ generals. There were blacked threads ffs. What /film/ needs is an active moderation team like the one on /his/ who delete irrelevant topics quickly so they don't become a part of the board's culture.
>>
>>68877509
>>68877459
This, an essential films list needs to be accessible and cover a wide range of movements and genres so it can serve as a foundation for peoples knowledge.

Why put in Murnau's most obscure films if you don't know about German Expressionsim
>>
>>68878598
Learn the difference between an essentials list and a /film/core essentials list
>>
>>68870728
I'd much prefer to have a bunch of genre and era specific lists than a blanket /essential/ but a good starting point nonetheless.

Having the lists broken down into genre/region/decade would be handy.

E.g. If I'm in the mood for a contemporary middle eastern film, it'd be great to have a "Drama/Middle-East/2000's" list that I can whip out.

That way people wont be arguing each time a list is posted cause its too artsy fartsy n such.
>>
>>68878466
That was because every baby board gets overrun with shitposting and also because it was during the worst hours on /tv/.
>>
>>68878659
I was thinking about doing infographics to different film movements, like early German Expressionism, Cinema Verite, Italian Neorealism, etc.

Would that be the kind of thing you were after?
>>
>>68878965

That's what /film/ should have, not an essentials list of top 100 films or a list of obscure arthouse films. We shouldn't have just one singular chart.

I've seen 53 of these movies.

Here's the ones that are shit:
>Potemkin, important historically but not a good watch
>The Kid, literally Chaplin's worst silent
>Gone with the Wind, genuinely boring as fuck and really not great at anything other than being old and long
>It Happened One Night, not funny or interesting. It's a Wonderful Life is better and if you diagree you don't have a soul
>Maltese Falcon, so many better noirs
>The Social Network, are you losers fucking serious?
>Intolerance, if you actually liked this 3 hour shit show I don't believe you. Stop trying so hard

there are some directors that should have 2. a few arguably even 3. its not just about the director, we all may have our fixations on and about directors but a movie list should be a little bit more about the movies.
