Also, man some of those officers were total dumbasses. I felt legit sorry for Lt. Nate.

Highly recommend it.

Really puts Iraqi freedom into perspective.
>>
>why aren't there more shows like this?
Because the Pentagon controls tightly about what kind of movies or television shows they'll offer their cooperation to, and if the show is too realistic(not going to be politically correct) then there's no cooperation.
>>
>>68862150
Sadly this is the case...
>>
It was a great show and I want to rewatch it.
>>
>>68862150
How did Generation Kill get around this? Did HBO give them an ungodly budget after the success of the Wire? Was the Pentagon tricked in that the book and One Bullet Away were generally positive portrayals?
>>
>>68863148
I think they got a large budget, but maybe the USMC played ball with them since I wanted to enlist into the USMC as I watched the series.
>>
>>68861285
It's pretty similar to all of David Simon's other stuff. He tries to make dramas based around certain jobs or parts of society, that the people that they are based on in real life would actually recognise and see as accurate.

Band of Brothers > Generation Kill

Why? Because it nailed the realism and drama of war while at the same time leaving enough room for action scenes.
Generation Kill suffered from having way too much of literally nothing happening. Just when you think a firefight is going to break out, it doesn't.
>>

>>
>>68865617
The reason why Generation Kill is better is EXACTLY because it does what you said in the first line so much better than Band of Brothers.

Really BoB was just very well shot propaganda and fun action scenes. GK wasn't afraid to explore the duality of war and look at various issues from both sides, BoB couldn't even have a prisoner get shot without first making him American.
>>
>>68865774
Im well aware of that.
It didnt serve in the shows favor.

It was one guy in a group of Germans.
>>
>>68865952
Exactly, but they wouldn't think anyone would care unless the victims included an American. BoB was basically an extended mindless Hollywood blockbuster about WWII.

GK was about one unit who were often on point during the invasion, and covered all the battles they were involved in. You think they should have made up new battles instead so the show had more explosions?
>>
>>68866058
Did you actually watch it? The only left wing guy was the black dude.
>>
>>68862150
is this really true?
does anyone have a legit source to back this up?
>>
>>68865860
Depending on where you were at the time of the conflicts. Some Divisions got cucked while others got in on the action.

And after the initial invasion, the occupational duties were boring for many.
>>
>>68866062
That's not what I'm saying at all. All I'm saying is that Iraq wasn't a large amount of "doing fuck all."
>>
>>68866147
The occupational "duties" were the worst of the Iraqi was. The invasion was a cake walk. The Iraqi army and the Baathist got their shit kicked in, Iraqi insurgency was the turning point in that war, and look what the fruits of US labour and billions of dollars turned Iraq into. A giant shithole.

Place was better off with Saddam.

>>
>>68867747
All that pent up negative emotion, the stress, the frustration, all came out. Up until that point they had been running on adrenaline, all their aggression spent keeping themselves and eachother alive, but the moment they stepped out of that things just got ugly - it's a completely different psychological place to be, either on the outside watching a video of what you just did. It's why soldiers often find it so hard to integrate back into society.
>>
>>68868058
I think I understand now.
Before I thought it was because Rudy was a bigger guy than Driver and Driver was jealous.
>>
>>68868123
I mean that could definitely be a part of it, I think they were all just so wound up by that point that the smallest thing could make them flip.

The scene makes a brilliant contrast with the one at the end of BoB when they play baseball as inspirational music is in the background, that corny shit could have faded into a flapping US flag and no-one would have blinked.

It's true, films like Blackhawk down and Transformers are pretty much giant adds for the military because of their pornographic shots of military hardware and portrayal of the soldiers.

Burn notice was getting too close to what the real CIA and military HUMINT really does so the government said "yo cool it", you can see the slope of quality after it happened to.
>>
>>68870780
I disagree, the two aim at something pretty similar, there is a hell of a lot in common. You can compare things that are different you know. I mean thats the entire point of a comparison.
>>
>>68870192
GK has better characters and the downtime is nice.
>>
>>68871237
This. Despite being longer, there are barely any characters from BoB that are even memorable.

you have to watch all of band of brothers, the documentary, then bob again for it to impact.

i dunno, GK just felt nowhere near as tight a production as BoB
>>
>>68871412
all the stuff used in this show used by HUMINT can be found in FM 2-22.3 which is open source, but it made the government nervous that the consultants might forget what isnt open source and accidentally write it into the show, they stopped it before it happened, but it was borderline.
