I just will never see what can be gained from a live-action adaptation. Even if one is re-adapting the story by changing certain elements, you can just do this with animation anyway. And with animation, you're far less limited.
Also, one benefit animation has is that it can more easily add a surreal quality to the product. It's almost like the difference between High Renaissance Art and Early Modern Persian Miniatures.

There also wasn't any other animated media to compare the movie to. There are a million and one LNs and non-adapted manga out there. While both Japanese and Western comics and animation had mostly the same influences back in the Tezuka days, it's been decades since then and the West went mostly undisturbed by Japanese influences until very recently. Right now, they both have tropes, influences and a culture surrounding them that's way to different to just say "they're both animation, so they're the same".
