Because 99% of of anime is just fucking awful. Little to no animation, stupid convoluted plots, heaping helpings of needless, often pedophilic fanservice.

Plus it all looks the same and it all uses the same tropes and stereotypes.

im not the one calling them masterpieces, the 2 ghibli films i mentioned are generally extremely revered and respected as some of the greatest achievements in animated movies. i'm trying to be objective here, personally i didn't love totoro or spirited away - ive just studied and read a lot about film criticism for several years. But i have seen Satoshi Kon's films and i can see why they aren't held in anywhere near as high acclaim as the some other anime films.
