This is more or less the process Nev officially released. A producer contacts the catfish and needs to make sure the catfish, whoever they might be, will allow themselves to be filmed as to make it seem they always catch them (and to save time and money not chasing someone who won't even show) but that Nev/Max/the person don't know.
Except several people on the show have said the order is reversed. Often the catfish themselves write in to either come clean or to be on TV and then had to act like the person looking for answers is the one who is looking for help.
