It was the worst Coen Brothers film in awhile. Still better than most stuff I see but yeah it was a disappointment.

>>
>>68834750
it was only slightly better if you were alive in the 60s
there was some interesting stuff under the cover - Josh Brolin's hero of capitalism who goes to confession because he smoked 3 cigarettes compared to the bumbling communist literal arm-chair philosophers. However they easily could have cut out ScarJo and channing tatum entirely and it would have made the movie better
>>
Doesn't surprise me /tv/ hates this, I've heard it said anyone under 30 probably wouldn't even be able to understand this film.
>>

would that it were so simple

>>

it's a pastiche of a bunch of 40s/50s movies, Million Dollar Mermaid included.
>>
>>68834750
I walked out after the guy who picked up the suitcase was revealed. I felt like I'd rather be doing anything else. It's such a mess of half developed scenes and themes, nothing sticks long enough to be compelling and few of the jokes were actually funny.
>>
>>68834680

Just finished watching it. Pretty good. 7/10
>>
It was great. Bunch of plebs in the house.
>>
>>68834750
It was pretty boring and I say this as a Coen Brothers fan, the setpieces and atmosphere were great but the plot was pretty shitty (not to mention there were too many characters inteoduced that didn't contribute anything to the movie like Scarjo and Jonah Hill).

The plot just sort of resolves itself with no real consequences nor change.
>>
>>68834750
Don't worry anon, I had the same experience.
>>
>>68837726
I saw it in theaters, a group of 65+ people were sitting behind me, and one of them was audibly grumbling about how terrible it was.

It's a simple story about faith and creation vs. destruction played out over the backdrop of Old Hollywood in typical Coen brothers fashion, I don't even understand why people don't like it.

Most of that was nice but it doesn't save the rest of the movie for me. The story is loose to an extreme, and for every good line or scene there's at least two or three that don't work at all. Stuff like the armchair communists and room full of priests is much funnier in theory than execution
>>
>>68838139
Guess that means I'm not a pleb, nice.
>>
Very inconsequential film. I enjoyed, it wasn't bad, it had its moments, but when it was finished I was like meh. Minor Cohens film, doesn't mean it's bad, it's better than most shit released to theaters these days. The best thing about it, is how it is loosely structured and won't let you know where it's going until the end. Which is risky because people are so used to over plotted shit.
>>
It's not very good
>>
Movie was fucking great. Wouldn't put it past this disgustingly pleb board to dislike it though.

It's not bad, but it's not a masterpiece or anything, it's one of the Coen Bros weakest films. It really helps if you know a little about early Hollywood and the communist witch hunt.

This movie is very odd. To be honest, it was more like a variety show than a movie. It feels like the main purpose was to resurrect some old artforms and show them on-screen (and those bits were great!)

The most interesting part to me, was to unambiguously display communists as dangerous evil people, while also paying attention to what they actually believe.

It wasn't the best movie ever and it didn't even try to be. It had intelligent humour, it demanded knowledge of the themes it was referencing, really a patrician comedy.

Based on this thread I'd say yes but the plebbest friend I have really liked it; he thought it was really funny and charming

Every criticism in this thread though is just flat out wrong. Saying that nothing happens, saying that it's half baked thematically, that the scenes don't connect to one another, that there's no plot, that none of the characters matter, etc. All of those are wrong and if you believe any of them it's because you're too dumb for a low brow Coen Brothers comedy

>It holds no punches against the retardation of communists.

I don't think the film is particularly pro or anti communist. The capitalist catholic's way of life is also mocked. It seemed to be morally relative. The message I took from the film was that there isn't a grand purpose to life that's inherently right, that the world is governed by forces beyond our control and nobody really knows what they're doing. The ending felt very cynical and bitter sweet.
>>
>>68848200
I know, i meant she's very good at it, cause she's doing very often.
>>
>>68848207
That seems to be a theme of most Coen movies. Life is out of our control and there's nothing we can do, except be a good person. A Serious Man, Fargo, Burn After Reading, etc. Burn After Reading is probably the most cynical out of all of their movies though, considering every good well meaning person dies horribly (Brad Pitt and the gym manager).

>>
>>68848207
It's extremely anti-communist. I can't see how anyone could see it any other way. The entire plot of a competent manager keeping the business running is essentially a capitalist thesis. Same with the side plot of the job offer.

Sorry I'm on my phone and we can't have a better dialogue. There's a lot to talk about in this film and I wish I could sit at home and jabber off but I can't right now
>>
>>68841436
It's an study of 50s studio cinema from the inside, so it pretty much is adopting cinematography from that era onto its own. Pretty great.
