old simpsons had a lot of talented writers who put tons of work into making sure the show was smarter than it looked. there's tons of fantastic references and jokes that you would never find in an episode of south park, even quick remarks from characters have a lot of heart put into them. if you watch episodes of the simpsons on dvd with commentary it's pretty awesome to learn just how far the writers went to produce good, clean (yet still raunchy and edgy at times) comedy.
