It's been analyzed to death. Amazing first half, great child actors, fumblingly dull second half with a trainwreck shitfest for a finale.
That said; the idea of an amorphous clown-beast which can emerge from any water drain was legit terrifying. Took me 3 days as a kid before I could shower without stopping up all the faucets. Funny how the movie inadvertently makes the 'child-friendly' clown mask the most horrifying visage the monster has which ultimately leads to it's fear-inducing metamorphism to be pretty much pointless.
