Jon Favreau's direction is what made it work, its not spectacular like the Dark Knight which came a few months later but it's not bad either

The lack of a script helped RDJ show off his improve skills, a talent he hadn't used since his stint in San Quentin. Also the ending fight had to be created entirely out of CG since they forgot to film exterior shots for it.
