My problem with this character is simple. It's not a feminist argument, it's not a mary sue argument, it's not an OP argument.

My problem is simply she didn't work for the talent she has. Luke and other character in the star wars universe worked hard to achieve their merits. Rey, as far as we know, grew up a semi slave simply collecting part to fill her days. She may of been in some scraps in her time to learn some fighting...but when did she every pilot a star ship? Hold a light saber? Fire a blaster?

My complaint is she is a character a new generation can look up to and she works for none of her abilities. She simply is just good at everything without any work, sacrifice, or growth, and that is lazy.
>>
I don't think we know enough about her to make the call about her being good at everything without work, sacrifice or growth.

Eowyn.
>>
>>68805397

she is the worst main character in the star wars franchise by a fucking mile, the fact that she learns to use the force in an hour after having only heard about it for the first time the day before and then completely destroyed the main bad guy in a light sabre duel despite never having touched a light sabre before completely ruined any impact Kylo Ren can possibly have from now on. They would have been better off killing him off in that scene since he is now the most unthreatening and impotent bad guy in movie history.

This film is utter and complete dogshit.
>>
>>68805397

>she's good at everything

Because we've come into the story with her already being an adult who lives on her own. She's ha years of living and surviving on her own and her entire life is digging around in the bowels of desiccated starships, that's literally been her life since she was in double digits. Just because this isn't all delivered via exposition doesn't mean you can't infer why she would have these talents based on her background and her career.

People always pull the "But Luke was different." and he was. He was a moisture farmer who lived with his family and the most exciting parts of his life were hanging out with his friends and shooting rodents. He had no personal survival skills on the level of Rey because he didn't need them.

Her backstory being revealed in a different movie is irrelevant, in the movie we saw the only skill she had that seemed excessive was nailing the Jedi Mind Trick on almost the first try.

It's all irrelevant anyway, she wasn't going through physical journey in TFA. Her entire arc was emotional and philosophical, the character being OP doesn't change that.
>>
Luke worked hard to achieve his merits ?
>>
>>68807189
isn't is really obvious to most people that she is former SIth with memory loss? there really is no other explanation to her picking everything up so fast.
Or at least I can not think of anything else apart from her being the new definition of mary sue, might even need a new fucking word for it when she starts throwing planets around next episode.
>>
Doesn't Luke become a war hero like a week's time after we meet him as a moisture farmer? Why are OT Star Wars neckbeards so deluded?
>>
>My complaint is she is a character a new generation can look up to and she works for none of her abilities. She simply is just good at everything without any work, sacrifice, or growth, and that is lazy.

Perfect role model for the entitled millennial generation.
>>
>>68805397
>Luke and other character in the star wars universe worked hard to achieve their merits.

He trained for about a week then went toe-to-toe with the best fighter in the galaxy, survived, then trained for another month and kicked his ass. He barely had to work at all. At least Rey had actual hand-to-hand combat experience before winning her duel.
>>
>I can shoot an tiny exhaust port because I have super powers.
Luke Skywalker is a Mary Sue.
>>
>>68807220
maybe he found it easy but at least he was trained by 2 Jedi masters and even if he just fucked around picked up enough and hone whatever skills he needed.
Rey just learned from seeing, maybe she can play a piano just by hearing it be played once too.
>>
>>68807266
But he had to work for it, anon! That one throwaway line about him "blasting rats in his t-16" totally prepared him to fly the sci-fi equivalent of an F-22.
>>
>>68805397

She's a better pilot than Poe Dameron

She's a better and braver soldier than Fin the stormtrooper.

She's a better force wielder and light saber fighter than Kylo Ren.

She's better at mechanical engineering and fixing things than Han Solo and Chewbacca combined.

She doesn't need rescuing by anyone ever because she is a strong independent woman who don't need no man and will always excape unaided from any dangerous situation on her own.

What exactly is the point of the other characters in this wank film lads? The should have called it Star Wars Rey Awakens, the next one Star Wars Rey Unleashed and the third one Star Wars the Wrath of Rey
>>
GLIB
>>
>>68807316

And Luke didn't lose against Vader because of a lack of skill, it's because he was still an insecure kid who hadn't had the emotional training for the battle.

Just like how Kylo Ren lost against Rey not because of technical skill, but because he was still conflicted about his place in The Force and was still being pulled in two directions while Rey finally accepted her fate and stopped living in the shadow of her past.

This is in stark contrast to the PT lightsaber battles where Anakin loses against Obi-Wan because of ground height.

>>68807372
Imagine they used the stuff they planned where she attacked other spaceships with a lightsaber while leaning out of an x-wing.
>>
>>68807258

Why would it be obvious to most people since most casual fans of star wars don't know jack shit about all the Sith lore. Frankly I think it's far more likely Disney will make her a relative of Luke or Kylo Ren's sister if I know my stereotypical hollywood 'twists'. Don't forget that this franchise now caters exclusively to kids, so they have to keep it nice and simple.
>>
>>68807446
anyone who actually enjoyed TFA is on the left side of the bell curve
>>
>>68807485

she wouldn't even have to do that, she can just use the force to make them all crash into each other
>>
>>68805397
That's the intention: it's why they made other MCs, especially the black guy, incredibly useless. With Finn being a real life Jar Jar, you'd have no other option but to root for the Mary Sue, if only because she was the only character showing some semblance of competence.

ANH is one of the simplest, most clean-cut Hollywood movies ever made. That's part of why people love it.

Is this the part where we pretend that Lucas was making some kind of intricate multi-layered philosophical masterpiece the entire time?
>>
>>68807088
>it's a thirsty beta tries to appear smug episode

Sad indeed.
>>
>>68806067
>>68806093
It doesn't matter what's revealed about her in the next movie. Her presentation in TFA was horribly sloppy.

Writing backwards is shit writing.

In ANH, we're given sufficient exposition for who Luke, Obi Wan and Vader are and why they're capable of the things they do. These characters are then expanded upon in ESB. Expansion is not the same as filling in the gaps which is what's happening with this trilogy.

Movies, even when part of a series, are still supposed to have cohesion and a start, middle and end.

The characterisation in TFA is really poor.

How long was he training with Yoda? 1 week? 2, tops? And we don't see him learn to use a lightsaber at any point in that time. Going into his first fight with Vader, he has never used the lightsaber as a weapon in his life (unless you count that 30-second dream sequence in the cave).

Then, a few months after the first fight (Episode VI is set less than a year after Episode V), he goes to fight Vader again and absolutely destroys him. What changed? Where did Luke learn to fight like that? Who the hell taught him?
>>

no of course not, but what he did was a million times better than this putrid shit that disney churned out, which let's face it is not difficult, I mean I have never really watched a film and not cared about ANY of the characters, that's how fucking shallow and badly written this film is

>so good at learning new things

She has Force powers? Every main character with Force abilities we've seen in the entire series is a prodigy.

Also the "new things'' she learned were almost all connected to her old life. She spent her life crawling around spaceships and dreaming of flying, it makes sense she'd understand how ships work. She's had to defend herself and survive on her own, her combat abilities make perfect sense.

Her ability to pick up Force abilities super-fast is a little jarring, but it mirrors her journey to slowly accepting her character arc and not being ruled by her past. As she becomes more and more of a "hero" more of her skills come to light.

>>68807950

>everyone immediately loves her

Han doesn't even like her until he saves her life and realises she has useful skills, same thing that happened with Luke. Finn likes her because she's the second person he's ever met outside of the Empire and he's desperate for friends, he latches onto being best buds with Poe just as quickly.

He didn't go toe-to-toe, Vader clearly fucked with him the entire time. You're also overlooking the fact that Luke is his fucking suck whom he never intended to actually kill.

You're also assuming he was with Yoda for a week based on nothing.
>>
>>68807889
Not that anon but I think the time between ESB and ROTJ is longer than a year.

It's also worth noting that Vader was just toying with Luke in ESB. Vader (arguably) wants Luke to defeat him in ROTJ also.

The point is there's far more humanity in Luke than Rey. He has to work to accomplish goals (or his strengths are at least foreshadowed), he constantly fucks up and other characters undermine him.

No try this.

>Piloting a (minimum of two to pilot effectively) giant ass freighter with 100% precision, through the interior of a derelict star destroyer whilst being chased by 2(two) highly skilled and trained tie fighter pilots. All while never having piloted a ship before and or knowing how to pilot that specific ship.

>>
>>68807372
She's unlikely to be able to dogfight as well as Poe despite the force piloting

She's braver than a humorous defector character? If you're right why dig like this?

She nearly lost to Kylo after he took the equivalent of the anti-materiel rifle to the side and went on a marathon.

She knew an engineering quirk that Han didn't.

She needed rescuing from the Death Star.

Why are anti-TFA fedoras so desperate?
>>
>>68808015
There is next to zero foreshadowing for her capabilities throughout the movie. She literally says she's a pilot seconds before she has to fly. That's poor storytelling.

Everyone loves her - BB8, Finn, Han, Chewie, Orange Yoda, Kylo, Leia. That Leia/Rey scene is ridiculous.

And as I said, more importantly than justifications for her capabilities or everyone adoring her, characters like that are boring. It doesn't matter if she is revealed to be Space God in Episode 8. Characters that are great at everything and without weakness, that don't need help from anyone, are boring. There's no tension in anything they do because they're already perfect.
>>
>>68808192
Yawn, you're a stupid little cunt making up stuff about Luke because you are upset that Rey is obviously a shit character and that is making you cry.

Either way - you're a fucking retard, kid.
>>
>>68807356
In the novelization of the film he has to go through 3(three) flight checks with Red Leader before he's accepted to even fly the X-Wing

On top of that the X-Wing is stated to have the same control scheme as the T-16 except with advanced avionics, a targeting computer and the addition of an Astromech droid.

The fact that he turns off his targeting computer alone tells you that he was still uncomfortable flying the X-Wing (Almost crashing into the deathstar, almost getting smoked by 3 other fighters, getting shot once etc.) Instaed of using the fancy targeting computer he trusted his instincts and experience (shooting giant desert rats) and pulled off a one in a million shot.

Did you even watch that scene? Watch how Vader fights and how Luke fights. Throughout the entire fight, Vader wields his saber one handed, easily deflecting Luke's blows. >but when did she every pilot a star ship?

Oh for fucks sake

She says to Finn right after they escape the TIE Fighters:
>"I've flown some ships before but I've never left the planet"

Rey has flown ships before but she has never left the planet. Read it again. Engrave it in your brain so you never ask this stupid question again. The line of dialogue is right there, in the movie.

Luke has some skill as a pilot because he flew around in his T-16. Rey probably has a similar amount of experience, and maybe with different models of ships because Unkar Platt appears to own several different models.

That's why she can fly a ship in-atmosphere.

Because she has done it before.

Luke gets his ass handed to him all the time. He's a good pilot, but that's literally his only skill, and he only has one impressive feat in the movie.
>>
>>68809157
A t-16 is functionally similar to an x-wing. Whatever the fuck Rey piloted did not give her skills enough to know the inner workings of the Millennium Falcon better than Han. This movie has shit writing and you know it.
>>
>>68807220
Luke:
>Shot down by Owen about going to the Academy; he clearly is being held back from learning much at the farm
>gets tricked into taking the bolt off R2
>gets BTFO by sand people
>fails to prevent the death of his aunt and uncle
>gets in a fight at the cantina and draws attention
>acts like a bitch to Han
>aggressively backseat drives
>shoots the door shut when escaping with Leia by mistake
>is the LAST choice to make the Trench Run
However, he DOES:
>start to catch on about Sand People not hitting a target as big as a Sandcrawler
>is complimented by Obi Wan on his piloting early on
>his idea to use Stormtrooper uniforms and to bind Chewie as a prisoner
>he figures out how to use the grapple to swing across with Leia
>Matches Han with 2 kills against the TIE fighters
>uses his piloting skills and learns to trust his feelings and begin to use the Force to blow up the Death Star

And that's just in the first movie. Rey doesn't really go through any difficulty other than being "poor".
>>
>>68809216

>>68808243

lol you fucking faggot, you're clearly a millenium babby who has been socially conditioned with the myth of feminie superiority since birth so you refuse to accept any criticism of muh strong independent woman who don't need no man. I've got no problem with decent female characters but Rey is so over the top OP she ruins the film single handedley. I mean wtf is the point of the male characters in this film other than as facilitators to allow Rey to use her god like powers. You could take any of them out of the film and it would make zero difference to the outcome of the plot.

Fucking shite shallow as fuck film and an utter disgrace to the legacy of the original trilogy.
>>
Luke was not some ace pilot during the Death Star sequence. He had to be saved by Han Solo. Then made a lucky shot aided by his belief in the force. It took the entire movie for him to do something of merit.

Some of you need to go back and watch A New Hope.
>>
>>68807356
To be fair, he just meant that such a feat (nailing a 2 meter target) was possible, even without a computer, not that it was going to be easy.
>>
This thread is fucking useless.

/sw/ when?
>>
>>68809278
>A t-16 is functionally similar to an x-wing.

That was never stated in A New Hope, and it doesn't change anything.

The Millenium Falcon is a highly modified freighter but it is still a YT-series, which are apparently very common. Why could Rey not have piloted something that flies similarly to the Falcon?

We don't know what she's flown, and she knows the current inner workings of the falcon better than Han because he hasn't had the ship for a while and there have been modifications made to it, which she knew about and Han did not.

I'm not trying to defend the writing of the entire movie, I'm defending the fact that Rey being a competent pilot is set up just as well as Luke being a competent pilot and it's a fucking stupid thing to complain about.

You want to complain about something ruining TFA talk about Maz's Castle.
>>

Not seen it but I strongly doubt he is equivalent to Rey in power!
>>
>>68808312
If you have to pay to see the sequel in order to make sense of the original movie, then you might as well be watching a fucking soap opera. Plot lines HAVE to have structure; a beginning, middle and end, and all the loose ends such as the characters that work to further that plot have to work within it. This is the number one rule of making a story, be it a film or some joke you're telling someone. Episode IV was able to do this. Episode V was able to do this. Both were capable of making a "self-contained" story that didn't require further viewing in order to make sense, yet also acted together as a further narrative.

Also I guarantee that the rest of this new trilogy will not "reveal" anything useful that will change rey's character. She's been designed to be generic on purpose; and they're not going to change that. Get over it.
>>
>>68809212

Could Rey gain experience in close quarter combat from fighting off scabbers, and can that knowledge be translated to lightsaber combat?

Could Rey have working knowledge of spacecraft from years of pulling out parts and trading them for space-bread?
could her piloting be a result of her latent strength with the force guiding her, as was done with luke, and anakin before him?

Side; obi-wan kenobi says firing a blaster is primitive, a point-n-shoot that requires little skill

I agree that her skills could have been explained better, but Luke is a moisture farmer before becoming a jedi, he could fire a blaster in IV without training and blew up the death star (though he did have prior training on tatooine)

I can understand getting mad at the parallels to Luke, but getting mad at her for having skills she shouldn't have is stupid if you're touting the original trilogy as better. you really are clutching at straws now and sounding a little panicky
>>
>>68811582
Where am I wrong? What indication is there Luke wouldn't have learned these things quickly in a higher pressure situation?
>>
>>68811325
"I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home. They're not much bigger than two meters."

Fuck off
>>
>>68811578
actually yeah he did, could have gotten them on side for inquisitors or whatever shit they call them.

The potions guy doesn't like Rey.
She doesn't have any friends.
She just scavenges all day every day for food.
she pilots a hovercar or whatever that shit is called
she doesn't shoot anything and when she does, she misses most of the time
>>
>>68811717
*portions
>>
>>68811717
she never missed any shots, that 1st round was just calibration and she fixed it while under fire to make it 100% accurate.
>>
>>68811619
You now sound completely desperate.
You are now citing an imaginary film that was never made as 'evidence' that Rey is not a Sue.

But despite that, I will still make a response. We see Luke in several high pressure situations and he didn't instantaneously learn new powers in any of them. Not once.

You might say the Force made the shot for him at the Death Star, which is one interpretation of the events but that's it and even that is not a certainty.
>>
>>68805397
>My problem is simply she didn't work for the talent she has.

So it's a Mary Sue argument. That's where I throw my hat in the ring too.
>>
>>68811717
What on Earth are you talking about?

If you look at the list I made, those are all plot points.
Your list is not in the same league it's just some vague backstory.

>episode V
>self contained
I'm sure most people went into that movie having not seen the previous movie, and the ending totally wasn't a set up for future movies. And I'm sure Episode IV perfectly set up the foreshadowing for Vader being Luke's father and Leia being his sister (especially with those kisses!).

Those points were held out for the sequels because they paid off more if they were delivered later. We don't need a character's entire history before we can have fun watching them do whatever. That's what made the prequels boring. We knew who the emperor was, we knew who Anakin was, and we knew where we were heading while starting from the beginning. No big reveals, no hidden character agendas, just explanations for what happened in to OT with added fluff.

You may not like it but the OT did the same thing the new trilogy is putting out. You're just more aware because you're older.

>Kylux shippers
Probably one of the most delusional people I have ever come across with.
>>
>>68811325
>>Luke didn't pilot a ship before the X wing
Besides his T-16, and the comments from Obi-Wan that he is a good pilot?

>didn't fire a blaster until he impersonated a storm trooper/shot down a tie fighter in the Falcon
He's definitely shot ship blasters before; he bullseyed womp rats. I don't remember him hitting much with his handheld blaster, though, but that didn't enter the plot really.
>barely got any training in the force but managed to make a precision shot to destroy the Death Star at just the right time because the force told him to.
I know this is a bait post, but this was the culmination of his story arc in the whole film. To trust his feelings and his instincts; to let the Force guide him - not to control him, but to assist him. It helped earlier in the battle when it helped him figure out good targets to strafe on the Death Star. He *has* made shots like this before, but can he do it under pressure, and under fire from Darth Vader?

NOT A FUCKING MARY SUE.SHE IS FORMER JEDI OR SITH.

The deva vu threads on /tv/ are the worst on 4chan easily, are you happy with that rep /tv/? the fucking worst board because of this shit.
You had so much potential.
>>
>>68811987
>You may not like it but the OT did the same thing the new trilogy is putting out
you saying this - something you've read JJ and others saying - is not a fact
>>
>>68811695
>throwaway line after Luke did all his shooting in the Falcon and as a trooper

So you'll have no problem finding out Rey piloted and trained in the force as a kid, right? It's okay for Luke to have his skills established after the fact, after all.
>>
>>68811717
The portion guy was sexually attracted to her. In the novel Plutt tells her to be quiet if she doesn't want to become an "entertainment" within the room with other aliens around.
>>
>>68812091
So you really think she was a fully trained Jedi/pilot at the age of about... 5 or 6?
And then she 'forgot' it all?

No. I don't think you do believe this really, do you?
>>
>>68811994
It's better to leave them alone in their sandbox, anon.
>>
>>68812182
not that anon but there are not any other explanations at this point,it is mary sue or formerly trained in the arts with jason bourne syndrome.
>>
>>68812226
Mary Sue it is, then.

>implying I give a fuck what JJ and other mouth breathers say

I'm just here for fun anon, not to beat off to Lucas's replacement and his defense brigade.

Saw The Force Awakens unspoiled a week after release having not even seen a trailer. Could not give the barest of shits about your boogeymen.

>WHATS WRONG WITH YOU U JUST HATE WOMEN

>implying Snoke won't have her bred to make OP force babies
>>
>>68812182
This is the same franchise that had the force impregnate a woman to give birth to Anakin without a father.

I don't think Jedi babies is that far a stretch.
>>
>>68812294
Good. We finally get some truth. You are literally a troll - a time waster.

Someone with nothing better to do than start arguments with strangers for no reason at all.

Congratulations! You must love being alive and making such a valuable contribution to society as a shit generating algorithm.

Have a nice day!
>>
>>68805397
Is that not the definition of Mary Sue?
>>

samantha carter

Nice strawman, pham

>all of this crazy shit
What shit exactly? Her background covers her technical and survival skills. Beating up some unstable kid who had orders to being her in isn't that much of a feat either.
>>
>>68812434
Desperate, mate.

Hilariously clutching at those straws.
>>
>>68812462
Sorry to upset you anon. Hope the rest of your day goes better.
