The manga went through a series of changes, the most notable one being that it went from being aimed to youths to adults. This changed the tone and feel of the story making it more slow and serious. It's only when a certain head gets sliced, that the series just falls of a cliff and turns into something else. It's still worth a watch.
As for the topic, the series has really gone downhill for me this season. I feel as if Ragnar and the series lost all sense and drive when Athelstan died. I also didn't like the casting choice for any of his sons.
It was stupid to begin with. Nothing about it has even been a little historically accurate. The fact that its on the history channel genuinely triggers me.
