We don't really have much in terms of funding, and most Australian films don't gain much popularity at the box office. Every few years something might get huge, but mostly the stuff that's made here are arty dramas or comedies with the same actors over and over.
It's weird though because at the moment, there are a fucking tonne of people who go to film schools to study. There's TAFEs (community colleges) that offer TV/Film Production courses, actual universities offering Media/Communications courses (which people mostly get into hoping to become filmmakers), and film schools (which are awful and the people that study at these are the worst).
Australia mostly specialises in short film festivals like Tropfest. That's the only thing people really care about/have any interest in here, but that's been fading away.

And also, the actors that go to Hollywood from here do it usually because all they have here are the Aussie TV weeknight dramas, where they'll have stable work for a few years but inevitably their characters will move away or be killed in some weird accident. Whereas going to Hollywood, they might not have a great career (maybe they'll do 3 films, maybe they'll do 20) but either way, they'll make more money than they'd make on the dramas here. We have 2 main dramas that the actors leave to go to Hollywood.

there are plenty of decent actors and production crews in australia but the problem is there is no writing talent
there is literally only one group that have ever written good australian sitcoms (working dog - they wrote frontline, the hollowmen), and also wrote one of our best films (the castle)
dramas have always been low budget "relationship" shit, about a country hospital or a country police station
the one time australia have attempted to make an american cable tier show, underbelly, it only got ratings for 2 or 3 seasons before everybody lost interest (because it was based on real gang wars and they ran out of interesting stories to base it on)
