I just beat the first R&C on the HD Collection. I remember the sequels like going commando and up your arsenal being way better. The first one is fun and all but most of the weapons outside the wrench handle poorly. There's little auto targeting and a lot of glove weapons which just have you tossing shit at enemies at close range. The HD Collection is good but don't put too much hype on the first R&C unless you love collectathons. I haven't played the remake but it's hard to get over

Well, it's not really dated when you play the game strictly as a platformer with gadgets like it was originally designed.
The later games redesigned its focus to a platformer + weapon combat and refined the controls to appeal to that. If you jump from a game in the later series and go into 1, it's going to feel dated and weird as fuck.
But if you get into the series starting from R&C1 and going up, then you'll be more than okay.
