Cranston's whole motivation was to find out what was responsible for his wife's death. Once he found out, there was nothing left for him to do.
While it was lazily written and a bit too convenient, making his son a marine and a bomb technician at least makes sense as to putting him in the action. Cranston was just a scientist - and with Serizawa providing all of the exposition, Cranston was rendered moot and redundant. Killing him off made sense. I'm not saying I agree with it, but it can be explained.

I feel like people missed the point of going to see a Singh film.
None of his other releases were judged so harshly on their mainstream appeal, instead being celebrated for what they were. That is, amazing visuals, intangible atmospheric scenery and a largely irrelevant plot line. The narrative is more there as a vehicle for the emotional trip his shots inspire and is not central to his intentions.
