It was actually a good movie, but didn't feel like PotC, mainly because the whole priest and mermaid characters were some of the most blatant filler ever, and because they're only on ships for like a tenth of the movie if that.
But imagine if you had never seen any of the other movies. Stranger Tides would seem pretty good.
I thought making Blackbeard less sinister than expected was an interesting choice. Still think he could have been a little better.

The Spanish stuff worked really well in the context of the series having this theme of a more mundane world encroaching on all the weird shit, but I didn't think Blackbeard was set up well at all.

The priest was forced as fuck. It's like they knew he was just obligatory, so they barely gave him much screen time. But you need to give more more time or none. Because when we've been focusing on Jack, Barbossa, Blackbeard, etc. for fifteen minutes and all the sudden we have to watch this boring guy for one or two minutes, it feels like nothing more than a distraction. 2 and 3 suffered from introducing way too much shit and blowing it up into two movies.

However, I think there is a shot of a carronade (on the Dauntless, at that), which would be inaccurate I think. Carronade didn't come about until the turn of the 19th century if I remember correctly. Late 1700's at the earliest.

I mean, I get that Cutler realized he was going to lose eventually with the Dutchman against him, but he could have easily devastated the Pearl and probably the Dutchman in that battle.
All I'm saying is: maybe Beckett should have had a two decker or something. That would have made a little bit more sense, and would be much more of a fair match against two frigate-equivalents.
