what are your thoughts on movie collecting?

obviously there's an argument to be made for video-on-demand services like netflix and so on - but blu rays have a lot of advantages: especially extra stuff on them, availability, offline/bad-internet-speed viewing and (in almost every case) best possible quality.

many of us live in places with bad internet speeds or outside of the US, which means that video on demand might either be unavailable or a huge mess

so - do you buy blu rays?
what are your reasons to buy or not buy them?

also, what kind of principles do you follow when buying them or building up a collection.

Yes. Now that 4K blu-rays are out, regular blu-rays are dropping in price drastically. Once a month, I visit all the second-hand media stores that I know of in my city. I often come home with anywhere between 5-15 movies for like $4-$5 per pop.

I do this because I want top quality of my favorite movies. I watch them on a calibrated LCD tv with a calibrated surround sound system. Literally nothing streaming compares.

Depends. Some DVDs are excellent quality and don't benefit much from the added resolution, unless your TV is huge. Film stock from the '60s through the '80s was not as good, generally, as the '90s and '00s film stock. If it was scanned and digitally mastered right, it can look fucking amazing in only DVD standard-def.
>>
>>68778537
So this just means going into the settings menu and making it not look like butt?
>>
>>68778537
Thank you. Faggots not knowing that everything on a TV usually comes defaulted to bright as fuck, oversaturated and oversharpened to look good on a Best Buy show floor.
>>
>yfw when you realize plebs try to watch kino on shit tier TVs with bright mode picture settings
>>
>>68778588
Lot more complicated than that. The goal is to make it look how the director intended, not what looks good to you.

Everyone is so used to reality TV and over-lit TV shows that faggits like my sister are always like, "Can we make it any brighter and sharper?" So she just goes into the settings and turns everything all the way up, like a fucking nigger.
>>
>>68778301
I started buying blu rays now - pretty much all of them used. there's a great online reselling store for them in my country and almost all are under 5€ (other than the quite new ones) and you can return them for full value within 21 days without needing any reason

great stuff, never had any problems and building up a nice collection.

When Netflix pulls the only 5 awesome streaming movies they have, I will laugh at everyone who thought they could watch those movies at any time. Streaming sites own us, not the other way around.

My kino enjoyment in 1080p with 5.1 DTS sound is always a few feet away. Media corporations will never tell me what I can and can't watch. Streamfags are all cucked.

I love blu-rays, and I'm obsessed with collecting Hollywood films from the 30's, a pity so few of them have been released in HD

I also like knowing that I'm supporting the restoration and preservation of classic films
>>
>>68778806
If you want, look up the model number of your TV, there are probably "calibrated" presets online somehere

for what its worth, its impossible to get true calibration without using all the proper tools (couple thousand dollars worth) since true calibration takes into account your room and lighting
>>
>>68778451
Quality is actually nowhere near awful when you sit at least 4-5 feet away. I never understood all the flak DVDs get nowadays when they are more than adequate on an HDTV. Actually some blurays are no better in quality than their DVD counterparts because they are the same transfers and weren't remastered for HD.

One of the things I hate about remastered blu rays is when they decide to change the original color pallet of how a film was intentionally meant to look.

The Exorcist suffered from this too when the Blu Ray release got rid of the Green tint.

Deal with it.

I do like 70% collecting and 30% streaming/torrent

As dumb and cliche as it sounds i like actually physically owning something. Also I buy lots of collector centric stuff from criterion and scream factory and shit like that.

Also I believe in supporting artists. Now if we are talking about some marvel/disney shit i could give less than a fuck if someone pirates because we are talking about multi-billion $ corporations here. But if you pirate some small obscure indie movie you are actively fucking the artists over. Imagine spending years of your life and a fuck load of money trying to bring your creative vision to life only to have some "lol i pirate everything" type torrent a shitty rip with giant korean subtitles or something.

There's negligible difference between DVD and Jew Ray and it's literally just a money-making scheme, keeping people locked-down in a DEAD FORMAT by making them by expensive Jew Ray players, and then parading it around like it's all COOL and NEW and HIP with your ugly blue disc cases.
Also fuck your shitty ad, you know the one with the fucking song 'tick tick boom' and it shows all those useless features and cringey scenes from films to try and add some le fucking quirky humor to try and make it seem less like a desperate ad when that shit COULDN'T BE MORE OBVIOUS. Fuck you.
