Rankin-Bass's The Hobbit is admirable in that it tells the entire story of the Hobbit in SEVENTY MINUTES.
Very refreshing, compared to the 9 hour kick-to-the-nuts that Jackson's trilogy was.

Rankin & Bass made the Hobbit made for tv movie.
Bakshi made The Lord of the Rings theatrical film which covers Fellowship and Two Towers and ends on a cliffhanger. It was such a massive bomb that any chance of finishing it with a Return of the King theatrical sequel disappeared.
Rankin & Bass stepped back in and made a Return of the King made for tv movie.
The Rankin & Bass movies are comfy as all heck. Really faithful given the time constraints. Their target audience is kids so there's a lot of songs and a light hearted tone. The Hobbit is GOAT and better than the PJ movies, the RotK is less good but still worth watching.
The Bakshi theatrical film is more controversial. It's really faithful but also really bizarre. There's tons of rotoscoping and a handful psychedelically sequences. A lot of the designs and characters feel off.
