Got so pumped when I saw the specks of dirt rising from his coffin. Such a subtle hint we might be seeing the resurrection of a character that was so beloved because I flashed back to MoS when he was in the church. >>
>>68771874

Why is this the only good thing to come out from the MCU? Is it because this is the only one where the character actually have a psychology?
>>
>>68769444
Its pretty basic symbolism

The preacher is being contacted by a being of a higher plane of existance, such that he views Clark as a supernatural being like Jesus. This is from the preacher's perspective, and is perfect foreshadowing to Superman's dissatisfaction with his role in BvS. It is not until he dies, that humanity realizes he was just a man trying to do the right thing
>>
>>68769621
The point of the overt jesus imagery is so fucking obvious. It's because every human sees him as a savior, but he can't find it in himself. He knows that he's just a man, and he's not ready for the responsibility.

Christ, I don't even like the movie and you fucking plebs got less out of it than I did. Kill yourselves.

>it's to smart for you meme
So you don't have an answer?
It's not done well. It's almost either the plot or the symbolism is the afterthought of his movies.
I want to say he's good at it but he really isnt senpai.
I mean it's sad when a film like 9 is how symbolism should work. Not space jesus.
>>
>>68769931
God, the A1 mask was so awful it's impossible to take every non-action seen with him wearing it seriously. He might as well be wearing the Reb Brown helmet.
>>
>>68774359
Seeing Space Jesus basically means you just picked up on the most superficial meaning. That's not a bad reflection on you or anyone else, because I know it took me a while personally to see what he's got going on.

The religious imagery isn't there to tell us "Superman = Space Jesus." It's to give the viewers a read on how people in the movie perceive Superman. That church scene is a great example of what I'm talking about.

When Clark first walks in, he's framed in silhouette there in on the threshold with a basically a blank, white background. Then the conversation between him and the priest ensues. He drops the bombshell on the priest that he's the guy Zod's looking for, the priest visibly gulps, and *then* we start seeing Clark framed with the stained glass behind him.

Over the course of that conversation, the priest begins to see past that "otherworldly power" image, till at the end of it, he's looking at Clark no differently than when he first entered. Just a man on the threshold of his future.
>>
>>68769444

can anyone explain this symbolism to me? i don't get it, Snyderverse is too clever for me

But thats not symbolism thats iconography in its fullest extent. I understand the context of man killing god (ect ect) but this iconography i have the issue with is the fact it adds no real layer of depth or any extra meaning.
>>
>>68774504
>>It's to give the viewers a read on how people in the movie perceive Superman.

Why should we care about how the people in the movie perceive Superman?

>>That church scene is a great example of what I'm talking about.

More like it was a shit scene, and an example of how forced the symbolism was.
>>
>>68776080
It does when viewed from the context of Superman's character arc. In the first movie, he's basically "born," so to speak, in the second, we see him struggling with it more fully, which culminates in the realization he has when viewing the flood. That's when he realizes he's taking humanity(and himself) down the wrong path with the image that's projecting. He's going to have to reconsider his approach, and in the aftermath of BvS, it's only going to get harder for him to do.

The irony front and center in BvS is that all the people of the world are all talking about their "new place in the paradigm," but the only people who are worried about Superman's place in it are Clark, Bruce, and Lex.

In subsequent appearances, this struggle is most likely going to come to the forefront more as he basically struggles to more firmly cement his role as a hero, not a god.
>>
>>68769809
>muh jesus symbols

Symbolism doesn't mean shit if the plot/story is fucking stupid.

That's like saying The Room was good because the tickling in bed symbolizes Lisa dissatisfaction with Johnny.

How can Znyder compete with this
>>
How did Superman dying translate over to Jesus' sacrifice? One died for our sins and the other for his own sins. That's pretty much the opposite of Jesus.
>>
>>68776595
Because he's not Jesus?
>>
>>68776626

Winter Soldier is all about symbolism.

Cap is the spirit of America, or at least America’s idealized potential. He's humble, he's good, he inspires others, he's all about "muh freedoms," he’s a throwback to the last time Americans saw themselves as the heroes of a truly unambiguous conflict (WWII), and is uncomfortable with/disgusted by America as it is today, having compromised its freedoms and ideals in the name of security. He repeatedly mentions how he feels lost in the modern world and its moral ambiguities, is depressed, and possibly suicidal.

Winter Soldier is America as it actually is. He's a killing machine that has caused untold death and destruction around the world over the last century (with imagery explicitly suggesting the numerous political assassinations and upheavals of the period), his true agenda hidden behind the distracting specter of Communism (the red star, the fact that he speaks in Russian for the first half of the movie and is noted/shown as favoring Russian weapons/ammunition) but in reality is a brainwashed feral animal in thrall to shadowy powers-that-be who believe in war and the reduction of freedoms in the name of order (a big change from the comics, where he really was a Russian agent: that's not an accident)

Think about how the movie ends. The Winter Soldier, America-as-it-is, confronts Cap, the Spirit of idealized American values. Cap, unwilling to kill his friend, surrenders. The feral beast that is America attacks the personification of its (theoretical) values and starts beating that personification to death with its bare hands. Only a nagging sense that maybe this is wrong, a flicker of memory from a time when he cared about the thing he is beating bloody, stops him from finishing the job. And that depressed and disheartened spirit of America lets it happen, is totally willing to be killed as it pleads with America-as-it-is to remember what it should be.

>>

>>
Quick. What would it be like to stand in a room with Thor, bro-est of gods? Would you be able to forget what he was and what he's capable of? What about the Hulk? Would be able to treat them like just another guy or would you be watching your every word. self-conscious about everything you said and did?
>>
reminder that BvS and MoS are kino
>>
>>68777773
If you were trying to get a lucky number you failed
>>
>>68777769
Remember that scene from The Fellowship of the Ring where Gandalf got pissed at Bilbo and the whole room darkened and you could literally hear his power levels rising?
>>
>>68777769
>>68777931
Now imagine *being* that guy and never being able to turn that off, and everywhere you went, people treated you differently and everything you tried failed to bridge that gap. That's what the religious iconography is there to convey in MoS and BvS.

Now go back and try to find examples of it associated with Clark Kent. Let me stress that - Clark Kent, not some anonymous, bearded man who you just saw walk through fire and crush a metal door in his bare hands, not a stranger who just revealed to you he's an alien - Clark Kent.

Now tell me it's just there because Space Jesus.
>>
>>68777769
>>68777931
>>68778152

It's not that there's anything wrong with the fact that people in the MCU don't tend to act like Thor couldn't just casually reach out and pop their heads off just for lulz, but it's in no way conveying what it would actually be like to be in the presence of a being that powerful.
