And yes, they were savages (by European standards), but I wish they wouldn't have destroyed their cities. That's true, yeah, I forgot about it. Most Cuban people are a mix of Europeans (mainly Spaniards) and Blacks, iirc. No natives left.
But what I mean is that they did far less massacring than stated (still awful, sure). There are a lot of exaggerations about everything the Spanish Empire did, including the reach and actions of the Inquisition.

They got upset because the Norse wouldn't sell them iron, which the natives viewed as magic (being much better than the crap they have) and so became increasingly belligerent.
Also it was a huge pain to keep supplies and stuff coming in when the routes were only open a few months a year. In the end the Norse just didn't feel it worth the effort it seems.

The Aztecs were fucked though. The basically had all of Mexico participating in these ceremonial wars for sacrifices called the Flowery Wars, where the point was to take captives not kill them in battle. When the Spanish came, most of the other Amerindian states were pretty tired of being forced into those Aztec battles and joined the Conquistadors to destroy the Aztecs.
