My mum committed suicide, anon.
The last movie she watched with me was Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood.
It seemed like an odd choice, because mom was never into chick flicks.
But she insisted on making me sit down watch this entire mediocre Sandra Bullock vehicle with her.
Then she never talked about it, which also wasn't like mom. She loved to discuss movies
But the whole thing, it is about this adult daughter who can't forgive her mother
because her mom struggled with mental illness her whole life and was abusive/neglectful towards her kids
Their friends try to convince the daughter to forgive the mother and let go of her anger so she can move on with her life
and the mother to communicate that in spite of her shitty behavior, she did love her kid
Basically paralleled my relationship with my mom, who was severely mentally ill and often a shitty parent. She was also funny and brilliant and daring, but the good didn't outweigh the bad, or heal certain scars.
But mom and I didn't get a happy ending. Just a long battle with chronic pain and mental illness that she lost.
I had a long shitty battle with my own illnesses and other tragedies after, and had to decide whether or not to check out. I decided no, even it is ugly and painful, I want to see how my story plays out, all the way to its natural end.
