I wouldn't say he's an asshole desu. If you've ever worked in a restaurant kitchen, you'd know that he is basically like any other head chef. Being a no-nonsense insulting authoritarian just comes with the job. Out of the kitchen, he's actually a really lovely guy.

You can tell just from watching when he cooks (which happens at various points in all of his shows) that he is very technically skilled, and always impresses other established chefs with his technical ability and end product. Its pretty fucking obvious that hes an above average chef.
I wouldnt make the case for him being elite, and yes he made his fame mostly off of his character and wit, but he is definitely a better chef than 90% of 'chefs' out there
