The feral kid theory about BaneMax is actually pretty interesting. I like to think that the feral kid liked Max so much that he grew up and tried to emulate him. Similar to how Indiana Jones started dressing like that one guy he ran into at the beginning of The Last Crusade.
George Miller actually hadn't thought about it before, but some guys at IGN explained the theory to him and he really liked it. So, who knows, maybe he will make it canon.
