Most of fantasy books have little intercourse involved in them, ASOIAF is a rare exemption of that.

It gets better in book 4. Sometime during book 5 reading it switched from being a chore to being enjoyable. Then it became a chore again for books 9 and 10. And even when it was enjoyable there were still plenty of characters with shitty stories. Elayne never gets good. Egwene starts to get good in book 11, Nynaeve does in 7, and Mat does in 5.

This guy has it right. The final book just before the author died was pretty good and kicked the series back into a higher gear, and the final three books were GOLD.
Like, holy shit. FOURTEEN BOOKS. That's a lot. So if they had a really shitty ending, you would have heard a lot more hate. There's a lot of payoff for fans, characters get their stories tied up, it's great.
