Cranston's entire character motivation was to find out what killed his wife. Once he found out, there was literally nothing left for him to do. In the context of the story, his death made perfect sense.
This movie would have been cooler if
A) Cranston lived to be our POV character in the monster fights or
B) Instead of some army fuck who acts like an action hero, we could have an actual action hero type like Snake Plissken or Indy.
