The whole scene was taken deliberately from the pages of The Dark Knight Returns, which served as a main inspiration for much of the movie.
The film itself kind of took Miller's comic and squished it against The Death of Superman, threw in some Justice League bullshit and called it a day.
Snyder's a pretty good director, and he actually shines through a lot of early scenes. But the overwhelming interference of what I can only assume are suits looking in envy at Marvel's track record basically ruined the second half of the film.
