I'm excited less in that I think it will be a great movie and more in that I think it will be interesting to see how it will turn out. I haven't played WoW for many years and I wouldn't even call myself a fan of the lore or backstory. In reality I just want a somewhat fun action movie with swords and magic and shit, if they can adapt that well from a video game that is neither fun nor action packed then I will be impressed. If it's camp yet fun, that will be good enough for me.

Warcraft 2 all the way up to wow tbc have good stories. The first war is a little uninteresting but i think theyve got a bit more source to work with than just the first game smashed into a movie. Gul dan and the fel magic corrupting the orcs will be great on screen, hopefully that will be enough to carry what will likely be quite a generic fantasy large scale battle at the end. Least we will get south sea and emerald dream shit in the next one.

I don't think this is going to be good.
Not because I think it's impossible to do a good Warcraft movie, but because I think they're going down the wrong path here.
From what we've seen in the trailers, there looks like there will be a LOT of world-building and establishment of characters/settings/races/etc
The problem is that doing this will mean that the movie will either need to be way too fucking long, or the characters themselves will suffer from not enough development
Really, I think the human campaign from WC3 would be their best bet for a movie. Let's be honest, it's where most players (apart from WoW) of Warcraft started - and there's a reason it hooked them.
Arthas is pretty much one of the best examples of "the corrupted hero" - not just in video games, but in fiction in general. He starts as a completely noble and selfless paladin, but after being forced to choose the lesser of two evils over and over, he begins to no longer seek justice, but revenge, and it ultimately consumes him.
It was a bit rushed in the campaign, but it never truly felt like Arthas was "the bad guy" until it was too late - even the mercenary thing could have been considered justified. As a two hour movie, Arthas' journey up to the point where he "succeeds" in becoming King of Lordaeron would work great.

The original Blizzard stories were great. Diablo 1 was some pretty great Gothic horror with leorics tale. Starcraft was a pretty unique grimdark sci fi story. Warcraft 1,2 and 3 all wrap up really nicely as a fantasy series.
Hopefully Duncan Jones & co realize how cheesy and boring Blizzard storytelling is. This movies quality completely rides on his ability to smack metzen on the nose and say no.
