Goodkind had the same problem that most contemporary Fantasy writers have. Brooks has it, Martin has it, Jordan definitely had it. They just can't end their fucking stories.
Wheel of Time could've been wrapped up at the end of the third book. But it dragged on and on, introducing new and pointless subplots until eventually the author died. The same is true of Song of Ice and Fire, that series should've been wrapped up in four books, five max. But we keep getting chapter after chapter of new perspectives that no one enjoys that just tread water for a hundred pages. Or the Shannara series. Fuck me, but Terry is milking that for all its worth, especially since the series hit its critical peak two books in with Elfstones.
Everyone today wants to be Tolkien and everyone wants their setting to be Middle Earth, so they all just keep picking at it.
