>Mary Sue is a female character that can do everything and anything to solve any problem that is presented within a story

Tell me OP, what did Rey not do?
>>
>>68678984
she needed finn to bring the falcon to the bad guy base so she could escape. although I guess she could have just stolen a tie fighter or something if he didn't show up
>>
>>68678984
I got into an argument with my friends over this. They thought that she definitely struggled, and I said that I felt like she never struggled at all.

I also asked a friend to describe her without listing her skills, and he said:
>"She's compassionate, and has a strong sense of justice."
>>

as a fa/tg/uy I kinda resent mary sue being thrown around in /tv/ because it really doesn't apply most of the time. Rey is not particularly "speshul" except that she's the main character of a hollywood blockbuster. By that same token then basically any hollywood action hero is a gary stu/mary sue. It's fine if you don't like TFA but singling out her character as specifically written to be the best at everything is just wrong headed. That's just how hollywood works. Why introduce 3 minutes of dialogue or a new character when you can just have your main character solve it and make up some tenuous explanation for it?

This is more emblematic of hollywood's formula than it is of Rey's character being a mary sue.

>pic related
definitely a mary sue
>>
>>68678636
It's a grey area.

She has LITERALLY all the hallmarks of being a Mary Sue - competent at everything, everyone loves her, the universe revolves around her - except for the one defining feature that truly makes a Mary Sue a Mary Sue: being a self-insert.

If she was a 100% true Mary Sue, she'd be a gratuitous stand-in for JJ in that universe. Think of the movie Lady in the Water, where the director, Shyamalan, plays a writer who's told by the water fairy that his views on politics and society will one day be the basis for all civilized life. THAT is a Mary Sue.

Rey just has all the shit that goes along with being a Mary Sue without being one herself. Which just makes her a shitty character.

, dare I say it,
>>
>>68679169
I think it's not just that she's really good at everything, but that she never has any failing at all (neither moral nor physical). Every problem thrown at her is solved without ever making a mistake or needing help.

What personally pushed it over the line for me was the mind control scene. I could totally buy her being a great fighter, mechanic, and pilot, but that was just too much.

Plus the fact that her movie is literally fanfiction.

What I really mean is that the intent isn't there. When I watched it I never thought once that Rey was intended to be idolized or seen as some really awesome character that sticks with you. All the shit that bothers people is just lazy writing which is a lot different from writing a mary sue. With my example of Keen from Blacklist I have no doubt that like >>68679354
says, she is a self insert for some of the female writers so she's completely infallible and badass AND has a lot of specific traits that seem to be very personal to someone.

Rey is more of an any-woman that is easy to relate to literally anyone because she's so middle of the road. Again I think more like an action hero than a mary sue. The intent just isn't there.

I dunno. I felt like they were going for a character as badass and cool as possible, but took it too far and skimped on what actually makes a character memorable.

She and Starkiller Base have a lot in common.

>mfw she doesn't rebel
>>
>>68678636
Yes.
One example I can think of off the top of my head is how well she handles the Falcon, even though it's obviously seen better days and normally requires copiloting. This is never given any explanation at all in the movie, and in the audiobook version it's handwaved, Rey tells Finn that she's flown a lot of vehicles before and doesn't really elaborate.
Even if it's true that she has prior experience flying starships (which doesn't make sense since she had never even been off Jakku at the time) how is it she was so familiar with the controls of the Falcon, a heavily modified version of a starship design which is more than a century old.
There isn't any indication that she's using the force to aid her like Luke did during the trench run on the DS1, so I'd say that her skill at piloting is definitely a Mary Sue trait.
Her use of the force goes without saying, considering she is able to consciously draw on the force to fight back against Kylo's interrogation with zero formal training from anyone. Luke took most all of the movie to do the same, and even then only with the prompting of Obi-Wan. Not to mention that using the force to intuit the right moment to pull a trigger is probably a lot simpler than using the force to actively defend one's mind from an invader, and then attack them in return and actually succeed.
