Tracee's death is downright mild by the current standards of violence on TV. Find me an audience member who so much as bats an eye today, versus the people who quit the show when it first came out. University is a great example of the Sopranos' comfy atmosphere, and the darkness is a part of that. It really puts you in Tony Soprano's headspace, where he deals with these evil acts from a position of great power

David Chase said the goal with the majority of Sopranos episodes was for each episode to feel like a standalone movie. There would be overarching plot details and themes, but each episode should have its own beginning, middle, and conclusion.
University is one of the best self contained stories in the entirety of The Sopranos. It is one of the episodes where you could remove it from the series and it could stand on its own as a completed movie.
