It's very clear that he didn't have an ending for the film, and it shows. The whole story is pointless because of it.
The director is also against super hero movies, but many people went to see this film just because it starred a man who once played a super hero. It's also technically a super hero film, despite the forced "magical realism" bullshit pushed by the director.
