What did /tv/ think of The Wrestler?
>>
One of the best films of the past decade. It completely got jewed out of Oscars.
>>
pure kino
>>
If you want to watch this, don't watch the trailer - it has all the key dramatic moments of the film in it.
>>
>>68636858
I just saw that Milk cleaned up that year. I haven't seen it and I've hardly seen or talked about since.
>>
true wrestlekino
>>
unexpected gem
>>
Mickey Rourke tour de force
>>
>>68636771
captures the industry quite well, its not all fake as people believe. Easily Rourke's best performance too.
>>
>>68636985
Trailers are garbage.
>>
>>68637037
Is there other wrestlekino? Nacho Libre? Also why did Randy work at a supermarket? Couldn't he be a bouncer, personal trainer, etc.? Great film btw.
>>
A top 10 film of the 2000s
>>
Watched it 100% blind which made it that much more amazing
>>
>>68636771
Terrific movie, and Rourke is great
>>
>>68637128
Maybe those jobs are too close to his wrestling profession, involving some level of fitness which he reserves for his deluded wrestling fame / career. Its sad, because the Deli is one of the few places he's happy and doesn't totally realise it.
>>
>>68637108

Made me respect wrestling a lot. Who was that wrestler (the insane one with a sock on his hand) that nearly killed himself from a ladder fall or something?
>>
>>68637457
Chris Benoit
>>
>>68637457
Mick Foley
>>
>>68637108

It captures a lot of industries well. Dancing, Singing, Comedy, performers and artists of many veins that don't become a big success but moderate and how their popularity wains. Wrestling of course is far more dangerous than any of those. Doing drawings or singing to old fans, no big deal. Could be the same level of sadness, but the risk is so much lower. You have such little choice than to put your body at risk

Milk was dog shit compared to the Wrestler
>>
>>68637457
Mick Foley/Mankind
>>68637548
The thing is about wrestling is that is relies solely on its fans, so you have to constantly keep winning them over by doing crazy shit.
>>
>>68637457
Mick Foley, wrestling as Mankind at the time.

He actually wrote (as in, no ghostwriter) his autobiography some time ago - it's a fun read. He had a few more active brain cells back in those days - he's always been way too willing to take damage to please the crowd.
>>
>>68637613
>>68637548

It's interesting how short the success is for most of these entertainers, too. The majority of your life is devoured by a small run of fame. When Randy went to watch the wrestling match, he clearly hadn't done so in a while in order to avoid it. He avoids his trailer home as much as possible because he can't escape the reality there, either. But, despite everything, the cheering audience gives him meaning.

sad to see how much he had fallen in rl too

didn't like the movie
>>
>>68637810
Read an interview with a retired NFL player who basically described feeling exactly like that when he stepped back onto the field in his home town for some award. It wasn't the game that he missed, it was the crowd and their cheers. Mind you he was from ages ago when players didn't get paid millions - maybe these days they care less about the attention and fans.
>>
>>68637848
Nope - his book isn't sad at all, though his sense of humor is pretty juvenile. Not a problem for me, but be warned it's not exactly highbrow stuff. He's a clever guy (or he was, at any rate), but he's not exactly cultured.
>>
>>68637948
That'd be a good read, I'll try and find it. Can you remember the name? Another good one is that ESPN (I think) feature with Michael Jordan where he obviously cannot let go of his glory days, taunting friends in games of snooker etc.
>>
>>68638029
Sounds raw / honest which is a good thing, I'll have to check it out.
>>
>>68637128
He doesn't have the education to be a trainer, nor the knowledge. He got the body he has through gassing. The clients you get in a gym are usually fat older women. He can't be a bouncer because the hours mainly fall on weekends and he wrestles those nights. Alot of older guys who wrestle "for a living" have a job like Rams where they are kept away from people because A: they can keep their wrestling look and B: They suck at customer service.

Pure kino, as others have said.
>>
>>68638096
Afraid I can't remember the name off the top of my head, but I'm having a poke around to see if I can find it online.
>>
so....is he kill?
>>
>>68638214

That makes sense. What did you think of the film? Obviously it'd be a little exaggerated (we're seeing Randy at his worst) but I'm sure it would have hit close to home for a lot of wrestlers.
>>
>>68638335
lmao you're stupid
>>
>>68638214
>I wrestled for 9 years
what was your wrestling name?
tell us a story anon
>>
>>68638335

Yeah, for sure. But did he know this going into the match? Is that why he invited the stripper? It's a great ending.
>>
>>68636858
i agree
>>
His daughter was a lesbian, right? Thought that it was kind of an interesting portrayal, she lives with a woman, but it's never mentioned in a movie, because that's not the point
>>
>>68638497
I think so - some interesting parallels with Jake Roberts' real life, thinking about it. Not sure how Jake isn't dead yet.
>>
>>68636771
>>68637108

man, i was so pissed off Mickey Rourke didn't get Best Actor, especially after he gave such an awesome acceptance speech at the Indie Spirit Awards. Sean Penn gave him props in his acceptance speech, though.
>>
i loved the scenes where he was working at the grocery store. showcased that he was passionate in whatever he did.
im drunk
>>
>>68638497
Randy mentioned it.
When he's buying clothes for his daughter with the stripper, he asks her some shit like
>"I think she might be a lesbian, does that matter when picking clothes?"
>>
>>68636771
I thought the boner i got from Marisa tomei was quite satisfying.
>>
>>68638574
It was so well-acted, I was really blown away.
>>
>>68638335

The downer ending was cut out very late into editing

It was pretty good. Grew up seeing a lot of the unknown guys in the movie wrestle, so it was a shock to see them.

still tho
>that R-Truth cocaine scene
>>
>>68637016
Milk didn't clean up, moron. It (deservedly) won Best Actor, but Slumdog Millionaire dominated that year.
>>
>>68638700
yeah, Mickey's always been great when he puts forth the effort. most of the time these days he doesn't. and now with further facial surgeries, who knows if audiences will ever connect with his acting again.

>>68638746
yeah, he knew. he has burned too many bridges and he is very abrasive as at times. i met him once at a bar in South Beach and he was pretty nice and cool. it was sad to see him drinking alone, though, so my gf at the time went up to him and we all chatted for a bit about art. this was nearly a decade ago, now. i heard he can be an asshole when he wants to be left alone, though.
>>
>>68638953
yeah, Sean Penn gave a great performance in Milk. Rourke got the Indie Spirit Award so there's that. his acceptance speech was awesome. if it's on youtube, i'd suggest checking in out. i don't think i've ever seen any actor talk about fucking girls in the ass during an awards show.

>moron

Have it anon?
>>
>>68638953
OK, I was mistaken. Relax dude.

Just fantastic. Heart breaks every time when Marisa Tomei goes

>Randy...I'm here!

Then he hears the roar of the crowd, his mind made up.

It's really good and the best movie Aronofsky has ever made by a county mile. I like wrestling but it's a depressing and scummy business and the film reflected this.

>>68637613

Every entertainer relies on their fans. I guess in some way a dancer or singer or so on could get by working within another project. Still, you're not the lead, if you want to be the lead you have to prove it. I think Marisa Tomei in the movie highlights this well. You can't be an old stripper. The two of them really were kindred souls, just his performance was torture.

>>68637810

I do stand up comedy and Im not anybody, but Ive met some nobodies who were more famous back in the day. It's utterly sad. Hanging to the catchphrase or character from their day. The crowds arent as big, the venues arent as nice, but there's still people. I sit here thinking.... my god, I HOPE I can be that famous, famous enough to be almost forgotten is better than never being anyone.
>>
>>68641381
If you paid attention you'd realize she wasn't exactly popular with the people who visited the bar. It is a pretty clever world building because both she and Randy were "old" -er than their jobs required them to be. In a way she was as the same as Randy; but she was doing it for the house she wanted for her child while he was doing it because he was one trick pony who didn't know any better.

Can't say he was whiteknighting her more like he was trying to make her feel desired again.

hard to realize that marisa tomei was supposed to be bad at stripping when she was so fucking hot in the movie

maybe they shoulda cast kirstie alley or some shit

Making Marisa Tomei look worn out just made her more attractive.
