Netflix's movie selection has shrunk so much that Amazon

>As Netflix has shifted toward original (and exclusive) shows and movies, the size of its catalog has gone down.

>Research last month showed that since January 2014, the number of titles available on Netflix in the US has shrunk by 31.7%. This was particularly pronounced in movies, where Netflix's selection had gone down by over 2,000 titles.

>Netflix now actually has 4 times fewer movie titles than Amazon Prime Video, one of its major competitors (which recently rolled out a standalone option), according to research by Barclays.

>Netflix still has the edge in terms of number of shows over Amazon. But that's not the case with Hulu, which beats Netflix on both number of shows and movies.

>But quantity isn't everything. Netflix's main thesis has been that original shows and movies drive more value for its customers, even if they are expensive to produce (and might be causing a reduction in overall catalog).

>This theory has at least somewhat been borne out. Netflix originals have an average rating of 3.87 stars (out of 5), higher than the 3.47 stars "other content" averages, according to research by AllFlicks, a site that tracks Netflix's catalog.

>And though Netflix began its journey into original content with shows, lately it has gone on a shopping spree for movies at places like Sundance. It also plans to spend $90 million on a new Will Smith movie, according to Deadline.

It'd be interesting if Netflix or one of these other streaming services made a news round table program where people of differing political beliefs, age, and backgrounds discussed politics, culture, and big news stories. Many people do not like the bias of big news outlets and it'd be very enlightening by revealing how events make different people feel and react. It could be very beneficial for society as a whole to better understand one another and could move people away from extremist beliefs. It's not like the streaming outlet would be picking a political side, and they could always cancel if the program doesn't work out well. Preferably they would only create episodes when there is a topic worth discussing, and the biggest motivation for the people on the show should be expressing their beliefs.

Seems like there's some untapped potential for a bias free news outlet that could possibly boost streaming service subscribers.

Rival services are brokering exclusive deals, and TV networks are attempting their own services.

They see Netflix as a threat now and are trying to break it by denying them content. This started before Netflix started producing their own content. Producing their own content was a purely defensive move against film companies and networks cutting them out of content.

This. Netflix may be losing some movies but it's still most logical solution to a family situation.

Amazon still doesn't have that stick out of it's ass about offering it's services on non-kindle Android devices. Their selection is getting better and better but they need to get over it and accept not everyone owns a damn Kindle and maybe everyone doesn't want to buy one even if they're cheap as a night out on the town.

This. It's getting scary.

For example, I just went looking for Amazing Instant Video on Android thing the viral marketer doing this had a point but he didn't

Instead I found a new app for some shit that they'll send you orders withing 2 fucking hours to your house if you're Prime. What's sad is that I would have been gloriously happy if it was available in my area which it isn't.

It will be soon probably though. I live in the capital city of my state, Arkansas. I can only imagine it's not here yet because of Wal-Mart legislation and Kroger going full Roman invasion mode.

I hate watching shows or movies on my computer, if I'm at a computer I'm way too tempted to play video games instead or read 4chan.

I mean yes I can stream from my computer to my TV with windows media center and my xbox, but sometimes that results in choppy play because I don't have a solid state drive.to stream from. I've been doing that for Game of Thrones because I don't feel like paying $15 a month for one show, and hey, I can't subscribe to it even if I wanted to from my computer, I'd need a smartphone or tablet (which I don't have either)

I've been thinking of switching from Netflix to a competitor though, if they're reasonably priced and have a better selection...

But on the other hand.. I do enjoy some of the netflix originals. House of Cards, Narcos, and I did like the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (not nearly as good as the original, but still fun fantasy like fight scenes)

Having more doesn't mean they're better. Amazon literally has softcore porn movies, if that's what they think is going to kill Netflix then they are too bright.
>>
Netflix originals is worth losing whatever crap movies they get rid of every month. Netflix is worth it just for Daredevil alone. Plus the amount of TV shows on their is incredible. The only thing that it really lacks is Blockbuster movies and anime. Perhaps they should focus on rare obscure films that you dont see everyday. Would love to see japanese horror films from the 70's and 80's. Even american horror films from that time period would be great. Give me more martial arts or maybe midnight movies. Cult classics. Just be different.

The glory days of Netflix are definitely over. They used to have a good selection of old classics plus stuff that was pretty new to video.

I'm not interested in subscribing to Netflix solely for their original content, which seems to be the direction they're heading. I don't care about like 80% of their original programming. They also totally pad their content with like a million episodes of shitty old shows no one ever wants to watch again. I mean, like, Cheers was a fine show back in the day, but is anyone really excited to sit down and blow through like 10 episodes of it?

That said, Amazon has a totally of old shitty movies no one cares about, and their interface sucks a fat one.

I really do not understand the appeal of netflix. You can find everything on netflix for free elsewhere for torrenting or streaming.

The only content Netflix truly offers is its original material but there isn't enough to warrant actually paying for the service. The rest of it is movies I've already seen, a lot of movies I never want to see, and television shows I don't want to watch (aside from Twin Peaks) because they are too time consuming.

Hulu is something I understand paying for exclusively for its Criterion options.
>>

Why would anybody on /tv/ actually pay for any media?

Aren't we smarter than this?
>>
>>68595200

Netflix wants content they can market to you now and many years into the future they wouldn't do news or current events programming simply because of how quickly the content becomes dated or irrelevant to their audience. I mean, how often do you read last month's newspapers? When was the last time you watched an old presidential debate? Do you do this as commonly as you watch old seasons on Netflix.

They also want content that appeals to an international audience, by nature current events shows focus on events and there is always a bias in which part of world gets the most attention, what issues in those coutnries get attention, who is invited, what language they speak, etc. These aren't really biases that can be overcome and exists in all media. IN fact the best media outlets are often the ones that deliberately focus their attention on certain topic and regions. Global coverage almost always boils down to shallow coverage simply because most of the time when you report on an issue, there will be plenty of people who have never heard of it before.

I tried Amazon Prime Video a few times and the User Interface was awful compared to Netflix. It was just tiresome to go through menus and sub menus rather than just scrolling through, and different series of the same show would be separate and wouldn't say what season they were until you played them. On top of that, having two seasons free then having the rest behind a paywall is a dick-move business practice.

>>
>>68614352
>avoid things like choppy playback when trying to stream from your computer to your TV via a wireless connection

Why would anybody stream wirelessly unless they had a solid AC network with all AC clients? I pirate everything with a box attached to my router which torrents for me and it streams it via Ethernet to my TV which is also connected to the router.
>>
>>68614668

and thus you have cables strung from one room to the other, which is also a hassle, it's a tripping hazard, makes it so you can't close the door or you have to drill holes through walls. If you're in an apartment, drilling holes through walls isn't an option.

No, the FreeNAS box torrents for me. I control it via a WebUI on any browser on my laptop or desktop. The cabling is pretty neat and tidy because its all pretty compact and next to each other. There is no cable going from room to room at all.

Just how fucked is the geoblocking for Netflix now?

I had been happily using unblock-us, but despite their best intentions, it no longer works reliably.

I tried using Unlocker, same fucking issue.

What are hopes for these companies going forward? Are they all kill?
Its a myth that USA Netflix is the best. It may have the most content but most of the movies are straight to video trash.

Countries outside the EU usually have great exclusive content (because they're not tied to same licensing deals). Norway, of all places, seems to be the only country with the complete Hannibal series.

It really is best to have access to ALL regions but now that dream seems over.
