Tolkien's prose takes some getting used to so you should work your way up with The Hobbit, which has a more lighthearted tone. Then LOTR and the Silmarilion.

There's also another book that is severely underrated. The Children of Hurin. It's depressing as fuck though. But if you like Greek tragedies or the like, you're gonna love it.

Probably Boromir. There is something beautiful about his fall and redemption. His character (along with his brother) have more depth than most.
