Has there ever been a more pretentious film?
As somebody who loves Terrence Malick, this is quite easily his worst work. At least it works as a litmus test to spot faux-intellectuals.

Terrence Malik is possibly the most pretentious person in the entertainment industry that I can think of aside from maybe Bono. He is the epitome of douchebag, and I imagine he spends most of his nights masturbating to his own creations.
The Tree of Life is awful, save for Lubezki's brilliant (as always) cinematography. Tree of Life works as a fucking screensaver, but not as a film.

The Tree of Life is unambiguously the greatest film ever made. And no, it's not pretentious. It's one of the most sincere films ever made. Malick isn't trying to impress, which is why he's still continuing his style despite the critical backlash to To the Wonder.

I remember being blown away by this in theaters, and thinking it was absolute best of the decade kino. Revisiting it it's still a great movie and a few moments are just ecstatic, but I definitely understand the criticism more and I think I chose to be super receptive in 2011 because I wanted the movie to malick me up and it did.

I wouldn't call this movie pretentious.
This movie is extremely empirical which is usually the opposite of what we consider pretentious.
I'm not one of those fags who gets pissy with definitions but even as we define pretentious based on culture, this movie isn't like that.
Most pretentious shit will bring up questions of reality and give shitty abstract answers or even no answers at all just to try to appeal to the psuedo-intellectual audience.
The Tree of Life is the opposite in that it raises many existential and moral questions and then tries to wash those questions away. Unlike many pretentious movies, TOL tries to convince you those questions aren't important. It raises these anxieties out of you and then washes them away using absolutely beautiful cinematography and a grandiose look at the world and the lives we live.
This makes sense if your familiar with jobes tale which is completely what this is based on.
