I appreciate the ideas behind this design, but the execution is lackluster to say the least.
>>
call me a filthy gaijin but i liked the 2014 look better

sure, this goji is appropriately fucked up looking and disfigured, fitting for a giant dragon thing, but it's tiny arms are goofy, it's tail is too long, and i don't like that it has melted, cracked lines of red energy throughout.
>>

>>68264662
I agree. The movie itself isn't that great, but the design was great.

The eneegy you're talking about is supposed to be exposed flesh. This Godzilla was designed to be basicaly a walking scab, or a burn victim.

Why so much emphasis on Godzilla? Godzilla is good but Godzilla verses a cool monster like King Ghidora or Mothra that was the good shit.

Other than the tail being too long, I really do like the design. He looks like he's rotting away from radiation burns and poisoning, which I think fits if they're trying to evoke the spirit of the '54 film.

I fucking love Kaiju films, but fuck Japan.
I've seen all of the Godzilla films ever made, but Pacific Rim and 2014's Zilla simply took the elements from Kaiju films and perfected them into the best giant monster films ever made.

It's OK not to like the american Godzilla, but don't tell me it got things wrong, because it had EVERYTHING a great zilla movie should have, and the King's design was great.

>>
>>68264684
But all those are just money-grabbing rehashing.

Whenever a film is all "time to bring Godzilla back" and attempts to be innovative it always puts all the attention on Godzilla and not the enemy monsters who should be as equally cool and marketable.

Thinking of:
>American Godzilla 1998
>Godzilla 2000
>Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (one new monster then just rehashing after this)
>American Godzilla 2014
>this new film

either no enemy monster or a completely sucky one. Godzilla now gets all the benefits of modern technology yet no one's creative enough to actually make other good kaiju designs.

I went into it with 0 prior knowledge, because I didn't want to be spoiled on anything, not even Godzilla's looks. I was honestly expecting them to pull some 1999 style bullshit.

Not him, but for me

1) Return of Godzilla(Godzilla 1985 everywhere else)

Zilla isn't here to save things, he's here because we fucked up. Very much on message with the original movie.

2) Godzilla 2014

This is the Showa(older movies after the first two) era in a big western budget.

We made Godzilla, we don't understand it half the time and shoot at it when it's trying to help, but dammit Godzilla is saving out butts from <Insert threat of the week> even if we don't like it. And has to destroy half the city to do it.

3)Godzilla vs. Mothra 1992(and the Mothra series right afterward)

I don't know, I like there being natural monsters that help us(even if they want us to act better). I like there being weird goddess and psychic powers. I mean we have Godzilla, there should be more strange stuff in the world.

4)Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah 1991

Godzilla strongest foe(maybe tied) in its best showing. Dinosaur origin explored, aliens reintroducted but with some restraint this time, and good fights.

5) Destroy All Monsters

It's Final Wars, without the aging CGI.

Basically, aliens go "We'll take over the Earth by mind controlling their Monsters!" Plan fails, they all are freed, and it's every good monster vs Ghidorah is an all out brawl. Really fun at the end.

>>68264723

Huh, strange taste, but I can definitely respect it.

I'm conflicted about 1985's Return, because it's basically a retelling of the first Godzilla movie, but then it kiiinda goes until Vs. territory with the Super X, but not really, and it's not very exciting.

It's okay, but definitely the weakest Heisei era title for me.

Probably the fact that most of those films weren't connected to each other at all except for Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (Millennium ver,) and Tokyo SoS.

Still I enjoyed Godzilla 2000, and Final Wars is fun to watch if you want to see Godzilla absolutely wrecking Zilla.

But my favorites are: Return of Godzilla, Godzilla vs Biolante, the original '54 Gojira, Godzilla '14, and Godzilla vs the Sea Monster (I dunno why, but this movie holds a special place in my heart).

Let me tell you. I've watched a lot of kick ass movies with a lot of seriously hyped up theater crowds. But my all time favorite theater-going monent was this fucking scene right here.

Everybody immediately knew what was coming as soon as they saw that blue glow. And with that one single blast, the entire theater exploded. It was even better when he blasted the last MUTO's head off.

The point is that in always trying too hard to be different from Western media, they've dug themselves into a hole.

I fucking love this shot.
Godzilla looks imposing and out of place in a good way, like he's something that shouldn't exist but does anyway.
I always liked when kaiju looked bizarre and unreal because it reinforces the idea that they just don't follow natural rules such as being so big yet alive.
I like that he moves slowly or hardly at all while looking unstoppable, it fits the feeling of dread and tension they are likely going for.

I'm also not complaining about the unmoving arms, there may be a reason to it such as Godzilla not regenerating right and now his arms are literally scars, but he doesn't need them because nothing gets in his way anyway.
>>
>>68264701
In the early scripts for the original film he was supposed to the reincarnated souls of the people that died in the atomic attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, maybe that's what they are going with this time?

I like how the shot looks normal otherwise, there's just this monster in the middle of it. Reminds me of some of my childhood nightmares about the stuff around me being normal, but frightening shit going down far away in the background.

My complaint is literally that the shot gives no sense of scale, what are you talking about?
>>
>>68264876
I was thinking about since my post, but imagine they take the decay/regeneration angle a step further. By the end of the film, Godzilla is almost nearly reformed, but once he let's loose the atomic breath he goes back to being even more tumorous and scabby, becoming almost literally a walking skeleton, everything dripping off him as he moves.
>>
>>68264890

You get a sense of scale by comparing an object to its surroundings. That's cinema 101.

In that shot, Godzilla doesn't seem that big, he looks to be the size of a tall building.

He could be much bigger, and probably is, but that specific shot fails to give the viewer that impression.
