He deconstructed the mythos of Batman, that's all it took. He took the zany, over the top comic book material and asked what that story would look like in a more realistic setting.

It literally could have been a golden age for film: take a bunch of classic franchises and adultify them. Bond just got sloppy. Batman was pretty very good even though tdkr was just meh. But now it's like everyone's forgotten how to go back to producing original shit. Not only that, but the following superhero movies and Star Wars didn't adultify shit. They just made every talk in deeper voices and have more close ups and darker sets. The plots are all still very PG.
