there are sometimes over 100 different types of bets you can place on an event, and events from all over the world, age groups, genders, etc are now covered. it's much more complicated and challenging to bet on sports now. you need spreadsheets to even consider breaking even

guess sports betting culture is just different over there. meeting people in bars, enjoying sports with friends etc is completely separate from betting. you get the occasional bets among co-workers during a major tournament like the world cup but that's about it
