I watched the first Harry Potter and didn't bother with the rest.
The Star Wars prequels suck, yeah, but Episode 3 had some good action at least. The original trilogy was boring as fuck.

Yeah, if you look past the fact that Tolkien basically inspired and re-vamped the entire contemporary medieval fantasy genre.
Yes, goblins and orcs and dragons have existed for centuries, but if it weren't for LoTR, they would have been forgotten legends and never seen the light of day again.
If LoTR didn't exist, World of Warcraft (and therefore this movie), D&D, and basically any other form of medium that uses medieval fantasy tropes would have never happened.

They're not bad per se, but probably on par with most Marvel movies: generally well executed flicks that satiate the generally ignorant masses but something true film connoisseurs won't look twice at. The most blaring problem with them is the fact that Peter Jackson is given WAY too much credit for these movies. Most of the groundwork was already laid out by Tolkien with Jackson only proving that he can't into original ideas as evidenced by the steaming pile of fan fiction shit that was The Hobbit. Elijah Wood was just awful in these movies and although the actors for Aragorn and Gandalf gave solid performances, ultimately they were horribly miscast.

Joking aside, I know what you mean, though I think the Hobbit being shit had also a lot to do with Jackson's lack of actual passion for the project.
Disregarding his various misinterpretations of the source material, you can actually tell that he did genuinely care about those movies and put a lot of work and effort into them, whereas "The Hobbit" always seems to exude a certain "eh, fuck it"-attitude.
