Ignore the memers, Season 2 is an unfinished clusterfuck. It gives the impression that it might be good, because of how much shit Pizza wrote into the story, but nothing ever comes together and by the time you've given it to much of a chance it's already over and nothing happened. It has nothing to say, it is not worth watching. It is an extremely indulgent cliched pulp crime story with no payoff.
The worst part is that has flashes of brilliance, but it still overall a disappointing abortion.
I didn't expect to like it as much as season 1 because that was the pinnacle of television.
I thought it was solid though, the plot was a bit thin but seeing Vince Vaughn pull off a more serious role was cool.

The thing I was most disappointed with was how closely it follows the narrative framework of Season 1. The villain reveal happens in the same boring and entirely predictable way and there is a massive shootout in ep 5, only this time around you don't care about any of the characters.
Seriously, who could feel anything for Paul Woodrugh? He's fucking NOTHING from start to finish. what's his arc? why is he even there? it's so retarded.

I was more invested in Vince Vaughn's character than any other characters in either episode. He was the only one who seemed to have a real goal that he was working towards instead of just being jerked around all the time.

It had too many main characters on the screen. They did a horrible job with pacing it. The ending wasn't that special. I wanted Vince to use his normal talking voice and not a forced gloomy deep voice. Half of the time it sounded like he was whispering his lines out loud. Also, the names of the characters and the cities. Vinci? Ventura? Bezerides? Ben Caspere? Chasoni? Only Velcoro had the coolest sounding weird name. Also, who... the... fuck... is Stan...?

Idk about secret genius, but youre misguided in assessing deep the character of Cohle is; you seem to have missed the meta-depth of the show, it's commentary on its own genre, media format, etc. For instance, on Cohle discussing flatness of life, membrane theory, and rebirth, pizzolatto says, "now think about the things Cohle is talking about. Is he a man railing against an uncaring God? Or is he a character in a tv show railing against his audience? Aren't we the creatures of higher dimension? The creatures who can see the totality of his world? After all, we get to see all eight episodes of his life. On a flat screen. And we can watch him live that same life over and over again, the exact same way."
If you take Cohle's talking about membrane theory as just, "haha the writer thinks he's smart for having one of his characters say "membrane theory,"" then you've missed a huge aspect of the show.
This aspect reminds of me of a central theme in heart of darkness: the essence of a thing enveloping it rather than being at its core. At its most basic, true detective is just a well shot and acted detective story. But its real meaning, the real worth it carries, is all the self-analysis that envelops it. It isn't laid bare for the viewer but is there to be found. You just completely missed it. Back to avengers you go!

I think it was around episode 4 or 5. At least he was supposed to leave her. He went from having children be his greatest goal in life to literally not caring. There simply wasn't enough to warrant that change. Character changes in film and literature in general are really tough because we know in reality that people almost never change significantly. It's usually much better to simply create characters that will allow for interesting interactions with others. Justifying changes is very tough and almost never works out.
