Wow, so much effort put into the acting, set design, costuming, music, cinematography, etc. for an ultimately lackluster and bloated script rehashing "sex drugs and rock and roll"

why does Scorsese hold so much power? He lost it after the genius of After Hours
>>
Seems like a show that should work on paper but looking at everything, these types of stories aren't exactly home runs for the most part.

This show is shit because it's too safe and has generally poor scripts.
>>
American seasons are too long and bloated.
>>
I hope that in 20 years there will be a series like this but set in the 90s. 1991-2001. Series ends with the rise of p2p.

Shoegaze and ween are the only good things to come out of 90's music

Grunge is absolute garbage, pop punk is only for nostalgia's sake

I think it's the first time I actually hate every single character in a show. with the possible exception of ray romano everyone else are completely insufferable pricks. It also kind of feels like some director's fantasy self insert story. Like he would be the one to create this awesome band and reinvigorate rock and roll but he's also involved all the big names like elvis and john lennon and andy dick.

I don't understand what this show is trying to be. Ostensibly it's about music, but we see very little music being played aside from bizarre fantasy segues between scenes. You'd think then that the focus would be on the recording industry, but again we see very little of that and what little we do see usually just dissolves into the characters bickering with one another. The subplot with the generic mafia don and the wisecracking policemen is so ridiculously contrived, its unbelievable that this show is the brainchild of the same man that brought us Goodfellas and Casino.

Also this is minor but somebody should really tell Scorsese that nobody actually throws their head back and yells like they're having an orgasm after snorting a single line of coke.
>>
The problem is that "sex, drugs and rock and roll" just isn't that cool anymore. you can't show people doing cocaine and screaming and expect anyone to really give a shit.
>>
>>68170966
>its unbelievable that this show is the brainchild of the same man that brought us Goodfellas and Casino.

it's really not when you realize that Bringing Out the Dead was his last decent film.
>>
>>68168876

>being this clueless to the sheer scope of amazing 90s electronic music.

Fucking pleb scum
>>
>>68171432

>Bringing Out the Dead

Patrician opinion right there
>>
there are so many songs playing in such a short period of time it cheapens the effect of them when they are meant to accentuate a scene
the ending of the pilot is a great example
he listens to the band and is so captivated by it, it reinvigorates his passion for music, works really great
the roof collapses and he stumbles outside, not even a minute after another song starts playing before the credits roll
why cram in another song at the end?
>>
>>68170966
>its unbelievable that this show is the brainchild of the same man that brought us Goodfellas and Casino.

that's because it isn't.

Goodfellas and Casino are the brainchildren of screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi. his writing is what created the opportunity for those films to be so effective.

not saying Marty isn't a great director but it's not a coincidence that they're above the rest of his films.
>>
>>68172964
Except Scorsese co-wrote those movies. ANd his direction is one their biggest strenghts. So fuck off
>>
>>68167447
The show amazing. Fucking plebs ITT
>>
>>68173063
did Scorsese cowrite the books they were based on as well?
>>
>>68170966
>Ostensibly it's about music, but we see very little music being played aside from bizarre fantasy segues between scenes
Wrong. We see music being played outside the fantasy segues many times in every episode.
>You'd think then that the focus would be on the recording industry, but again we see very little of that
Wrong again. It's been the main driving plot since the first episode. Do you even watch the show?
>>
>>68171432
Contrarian opinion right there
>>
>>68167447

This show has such great production values, but i can't really believe how this has the same budget as the upcoming GoT season. Doesn't really add up to me. But yeah recreating the 70's, music licensing, paying talent probably takes a big chunk out of it. What annoys me about this show is that now after 9 episodes the company is still in a downfall, everyone is still fucking jumpy and depressed and nothing even close to a form of redemption or success has happened to any of the characters. It just gets very frustrating to watch at this point. I most certainly get it that the whole business is shaky and a silver lining is in most cases never to be found, but how many times are we gonna see that they get this close to signing a big artist or finding a new sound only for it all to go bust and down the shitter anyways.
>>

Nasty Bits are gonna save them
>>
this is madman with rock n roll... someone already called it before?
>>
>>68174403

I don't really know. They're quite an unstable bunch and had to steal a song their manager wrote just so they could record shit and keep it together. With one episode left i sure as hell hope that they give us at least one positive incentive to watch the second season if it ever happens anyways. Otherwise a lot of people will just not care if it's all hopeless for them. Doesn't really help that most of the people in this show are downright assholes or incompetent so caring about them was even uncertain in the first place.
>>
>>68170966
>somebody should really tell Scorsese that nobody actually throws their head back and yells like they're having an orgasm after snorting a single line of coke

Wasn't Scorsese a huge cokehead in the 70s? So i'm sure he knows how things were back then. I don't think he has anything to do with production, he just directed pilot and got a producers credit to legitimize it promos, he doesn't actually do shit
>>
>>68167447

nobody watches it.

I will forever be assblasted that Terence Winter let Boardwalk Empire die prematurely for this shitty show instead of giving us the full 7 Seasons to conclude the story. And now they even fired him, all for nothing.
>>
>>68167447

Never thought i'd say this but Ray Romano is by far the best thing about this show.

The Lester scene with him playing different songs with same chords was good. How about you make more of those?

Pretty much this

It's the only current HBO series with top tier nudity. Game of Thrones has been pretty meh in that regard for the past 2 years and True Detective just stopped after roping people in with daDDario.
