He plays a very complex character flawlessly. His oratory skills are on par with Lancaster Dodd (no easy task), and he sounds very similar vocally, but in an effortless manner. You almost believe his mumbo jumbo because he speaks with such integrity. There's also great sympathy and humanity in him at times, especially his relationship to Freddie (obviously Joaquin is incredible as well). And then we see it all flip suddenly when Freddie says he's going to leave. It's such a difficult character arc to portray and no one else could have done it without making the him a caricature. Hoffman is just masterful (shit pun) throughout. I don't think I've ever believed in the realism of a character more (other than maybe Paul in Last Tango in Paris).
