I rewatched man of steel recently and it's actually not very "dark", yeah you get those lines from Pa Kent but the music is really uplifting, you have Jor-el/jor-el hologram telling Clark he can accomplish great things, test his limits etc etc.
And Clark smiles a lot too, and he actually engages people in conversation as Superman, talking to the General about surrendering himself to Zod if that's necessary to keep people from being hurt, and even the little bit at the end when he crushes the drone, as well as him talking with Ma about what to do at the end.
Man of Steel starts kind of dreary but by the end it feels like good things should follow.
