I'm listening to Gone Girl's commentary track right now, I kind of wish Affleck and Pike had been there with Fincher because there are a few moments of large silences. Also it would have been funny to hear Affleck react to Fincher saying if he was Affleck's wife he'd get really nervous about him having affairs with strange women because he's such a smooth operator. I think he brings it up twice in the movie. Another fun moment is that he brings up a deal he had with Steven Soderbergh. The deal was that they'd feature a bottle of Soderbergh's Singani '63 in a scene of his choosing and Soderbergh picked the fake rape scene. Fincher then says when Rosamund was asked what bottle of wine/etc she wanted to celebrate the movie wrapping she did _NOT_ choose the Sigani '63.

Anyway are there any tidbits from commentary tracks that /tv/ remembers and wants to share, or have any general recommendations for fun commentary tracks?

in tropic thunder RDJ stays in character as the black guy throughout.

staying true to the film when he says
>Man, I don't drop character till I done the DVD commentary.

James Cameron was recognized by a nuclear laboratory for this scene in T2
>>
>>68123987
It's pretty fucking terrifying they were like "Yeah, that scene pretty well describes being hit by a nuke."
>>
>>68124079
Definitely. It's weird having grown up without that fear or even awareness of them and then to see that scene in T2 or the little kid freaking out in Bridge of Spies.

i know this board hates kevin smith, but all his commentary tracks are the best. i am a commentary track junkie and even rip the audio of them and listen to them like podcasts sometimes. anything roger ebert does a commentary track on is great. same with oliver stone. have never found a steven spielberg commentary track
>>
>>68123304
also Total Recall commentary is great

the mom from Yi Yi did the crying scene in one take
>>

Came to post this. Evil Dead I and II commentary tracks are fun as hell. Bunch of friends reminiscing over their accidental masterpieces and pointing out everywhere the seams (or gymnasium ceilings) are visible.
>>
Richard Linklater's commentary tracks are also the bomb. He really is a chill guy who is super knowledgable on all things film. Especially with his early films it's fun to hear him talk about all his oddball friends who worked on or inspired the films.
>>
>>68124528
Kevin Smith commentaries are all great because he's got Jason Mewes and all his friends there and they're usually having a good time.
>>
>>68123433
When the character breaks character in the film, he goes to Lazarus, then the film completes and he decompresses again, finally returning to RDJ

In Vanda's Room commentary track is god-tier.

I can't really think of one point that stood out. I suppose the influence of portraiture on the images, that was interesting.

That the director was afraid to use the camera he used for the film and took a couple of months to feel comfortable using it. Just the idea of this master filmmaker being afraid of the technology he needs to capture his vision was motivational since I am a filmmaker and I find the technical aspect of things to be the most frustrating sometimes. And I worry I am alone in that feeling.

Also that he was on set for an earlier, higher budget project. And one day he saw something outside of the shot that was being prepared. And the director, Pedro Costa, tells his cinematographer, "I want that," and the photogapher says "well, you can't have that." And as a result he changed his style, he figured out a way to not let moments like that get away from him, by getting out of a studio system and making personal projects that feel just as big but without the budget.

The whole commentary is filled with interesting things that are vital for independent filmmakers.

Verhoeven's track for this is funny/insightful.
>>
>>68127231
The Ben Affleck commentary track for Armageddon has a few good moments, like when he talks about how he asked Michael Bay about why they wouldn't just train astronauts how to drill rather than the other way around, and Michael Bay basically told him to go fuck himself.

Oh, I just realized people might think that copy of Gone Girl has the commentary and it definitely did not. I looked at the archives though and it looks like the link I got it from is still up and running so in case anyone wants it here it is: https://mega.nz/#!HkACxQhb!8VfS3m_vAYmaeOML2cCC7_fE1x9z85UPyXE0kDiP9v0

Thank you to the original Anon who uploaded it. Here are the other commentary tracks that he linked. I think they are all still working links.

Ben, you cheeky cunt. That's a great thing in the Gladiator commentary with Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe. I think Russell memorized the list of errors from IMDB before sitting down to do the work because he just about picked every one of them out. Even if Ridley was talking he'd jump in and say "Oh, we fucked up here." and Ridley would just groan or not say anything at all.

Watched the Halloween commentary with Carpenter and Jamie Lee Curtis and it was really fun too. They both point out lots of neat stuff and they're really friendly and JLC is kind of freaking out the whole time because she just can't watch scary movies.

The bit in the South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut commentary when Matt and Trey are talking about a meeting they had with the producers, and they talk about a guy showing them a graph. I think they say one of the producers goes "So if we aimed for a PG13 rating, we'd be increasing our box office by a large portion?" or something and the guy with the graph goes "That's right Jim!", the way Trey says it is fucking hilarious. They shit a lot on the producers in that commentary

Del Toro really, really hates horses

also the Mimic commentary track is a fascinating look into how batshit insane Hollywood execs can be

http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/556565-ten-crazy-learned-guillermo-del-toros-mimic-directors-cut-audio-commentary

Tests! The mimics used to have antennas, but the feedback we got from the studio was a raging phone call where they said, “They look like bugs. The mimics look like bugs.”

I said, “But of course, we’ve been developing the creatures for a year-and-a-half, you’ve seen the designs, you’ve seen the maquettes, you’ve seen the clay molds, you’ve seen everything and they are bugs.”

“Well can you make them more like aliens?”

I said, “I don’t want to make them more like aliens. At this stage we already have functioning puppets with radio-controlled servos, animatronics. What do you mean redesign them?”

And somebody said a really great line, they said, “Can you make their teeth bigger?”

I said, “They don’t have teeth.”

“Well show more of their gums.”

I said, “They don’t have gums! They have a multi-part, mouth system!”

“Well can you give them crazy hair?”

“They don’t have hair, they are insects.”

For some reason the commentary track for Napoleon Dynamite is fresh in my mind. I think low budget films like that have great commentary tracks.
