it definitely wasn't effortless. He had his own desires that the Ring could manipulate. Unlike Saruman, who wanted control and power, Gandalf desired to do good and bring peace. The Ring would twist this however, since it was basically an extension of Sauron's will, and Gandalf would ultimately fall to evil and become the new Dark Lord if he put it on. Gandalf simply knew all this, and wasn't arrogant enough to think he could simply master the Ring like Saruman
If the ring could grant powers why does it only grant invisibility when hobbits wear it? If someone else took the ring could they have actually overthrown Sauron and take his place?
