I think the heroin use immediately after the death characterized them all pretty well, and it was really effective when it comes back to haunt renton. Its place in the movie acts really well as a small inconvenience at the time, but really something horrible that stuck with the characters that they chose to not think about for the rest of their lives

It quite unabashedly depicts its users as degenerate criminals and how it destroy's a person's life. Critics think because it has some scenes where the characters are out partying or having a good time that it is endorsing heroin, which is moronic.
